State officials agree lease of Randolph school for police academy
By FRED HANSON The Patriot Ledger
RANDOLPH - State officials have approved leasing the closed Tower Hill School for a regional police training academy, Randolph Selectman Maureen Kenney disclosed at Monday night’s board meeting.
The state will lease the building for 10 years, but the amount of rent has yet to be determined. The state will also spend an estimated $500,000 for renovations, said Kenney, who is also a member of the school committee.
The academy will train about 150 new police officers each year and will hold annual classes for about 2,000 police officers from around Southeastern Massachusetts.
‘‘There will be an increased police presence in the community that won’t cost the town a dime,’’ Kenney said.
The officers will also provide a boost for local businesses, she said.
During a meeting with the school committee last month, Municipal Police Training Committee Executive Director Dennis Pinkham said a new location was needed after the agency had to move out of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. It is also about to lose its office site in Taunton.
Pinkham said no firearms or motor vehicle training will take place in Randolph, and the only activity outside the building will be physical education.
Police Chief Paul Porter, who is a member of the committee, said he supports the lease.
Cadets at the academy can be called in to search for missing persons and evidence, Porter said. Police officers passing through town on the way to training classes will help deter crime, and will generally be driving marked police cruisers, he said.
‘‘These police officers are all on duty. If they see a crime being committed, they will intervene’’ and have done so in the past, Porter said.
The Tower Hill School closed two years ago, when kindergarten and early childhood classes were transferred to the Devine School. Budget cuts forced the Devine School to close in June.
Pinkham said the academy hopes to use the Devine School during renovations at the Tower Hill School.
Kenney said some final details of the lease agreement need to be worked out. Final approval by the school committee is also required.
In other business last night, selectmen announced plans to hold a special town meeting Dec. 10. The warrant for the meeting will open on Oct. 2 and close at the next selectmen’s meeting on Oct. 15.
Also at that meeting, the board hopes to appoint the first town planner. The board voted Monday night to create a subcommittee to interview four candidates for the job and make a recommendation to the full board.
The board also approved a license for above-ground storage of 12,500 gallons of vegetable oil at the Stacy’s Pita Chip plant at 663 North St.
