Poking around and found this. Very interesting. I doubt we'll see this equipment around here anytime soon although I guess they're starting to use some of the technology in CT?
Seems like the only real new thing is the software for the ALPS (timestamp and GPS) as the Canada one doesn't specify and the GPS dart thing. Still cool though!

hmm...very interesting. Going through related videos stemming from the one you posted I found this very good demonstration by a Long Beach CA Police Officer.
Of course that demonstration was put on by a Sergeant, making me believe that technology is most likely in the Patrol Supervisor's car instead of a regular patrol car. Sounds about right...

You're right, this thing is pretty cool. We've had it for a few years now. The car runs a lot of license plates on its own without anyone having to input the plate in the MDT. The cameras scan the plates themselves, both parked and moving vehicles. It is a pretty expensive system so you really wouldn't want to crash it.
For us, a number of patrol officers are trained in it and take it out each day, not supervisors.

What I thought of when I saw this was, say something like an Amber Alert is put out from some place in Tennessee. The police have vehicle description and plate number but manages to get to, lets say California since some PDs have the technology. Police in California won't be so much on the look out because it originated in Tennessee. Well, they made it to CA and a cruiser with this stuff passes the car which was stopped at a red light for a left turn, Officer has green light to go straight. ALPR picks it up as cruiser goes by, alerts Officer and the Officer takes appropriate action and most likely the child/children are found.
Hopefully the use of this technology will rapidly become more prevalent.

I was at the Big-E last weekend and I saw the MSP had the ALPR system on one of the cruisers there.

LA County is using this as well - I was in one of their squads a few months back and they're deploying it on a larger scale basis.
They're also deploying stationary equipment for LPR in Compton - which is patrolled by LA County SD...
This technology is very prevalent in Europe - UK has many malls and other areas with LPR technolgy in place.
