PEABODY - Police are glad no one was hurt when a store clerk refused to give any money to a knife-wielding robber just after midnight yesterday. The attempted robbery occurred at the White Hen Pantry at 79 Lowell St. "We would never recommend someone put themselves at risk of injury by resisting an armed person who was attempting to commit a robbery," said Peabody police Lt. Dennis Bonaiuto, the department's spokesman. "However, in this case, the fact that other people were starting to come into the store, all of the circumstances may have led the would-be robber to conclude it was best to flee the store." Detectives were searching for the assailant yesterday. He was described as a white male standing about 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing long pants with a red-and-black sweatshirt. He threatened the clerk with what appeared to be a small steak knife. He ran away across the street and toward St. John's School. No one was hurt in the incident, and no money was stolen.
