GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) Fire broke out inside an elderly woman's apartment unit in Greenfield Thursday night. She got out, but her neighbor was trapped inside. One of those men is recovering at UMass Medical Center in the burn unit with second and third degree burns. Everyone else got out thanks to him and a police officer, who demonstrated courage under fire.
As the four elderly residents of Elm Terrace pack up their belongings, fire crews were back on scene Friday after battling a Thursday night fire which temporarily left them displaced. "I looked out my window, diagonal to that building, and I saw in the back, smoke pouring out," said neighbor, Susan Bennett.
While elderly and disabled residents were filing out, two men raced back in, including Michael Lucier. "He lives across the project, across the street, and he came in to help rescue people and get them out of the unit," said Judy Hastings, director of the housing development.
Not far behind was Greenfield Police Officer Jeffrey Goulet. "He was up there as long as he could stand it...he was the first responder," said Bennett. "When they said there were still people inside, I went inside to see what I could do and it was filled with smoke. You could see the glow coming from the flames on the second floor," recalled Officer Goulet.
The first person the 31-year-old noticed was Lucier with third degree burns, gasping for air. "I saw him lying on the ground so I grabbed him and brought him downstairs," said a humble Goulet.
Police officers are not trained to run into burning buildings, but knew he had to go back in. "I was knocking on the door but [the resident] wouldn't answer; it was too smoky I couldn't breathe," continued Goulet.
As soon as he ran out, fire crews showed up, rescuing the disabled 90-year-old woman with a ladder. The Greenfield Housing Authority Director and fire victims credit officer Goulet and Lucier for risking their lives to save others. "I was just trying to do my job, I guess," said Goulet.
Greenfield firefighters also deserve a lot of credit as well. They, along with the state fire marshal, are investigating how it started, but know it was in the second floor apartment, 18C.
