NEW BEDFORD — An 18-year-old man died of a gunshot wound to the head in the South End Thursday night, according to police.
After responding to a 911 call around 9:30 p.m., police found the victim lying in the street outside a house on Rivet Street next to a 38-caliber revolver.
The victim suffered severe wounds to the head and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital. He later died from his injuries, according to Lt. Jeffrey Silva, a department spokesman.
"It sounded like firecrackers," said the victim's aunt, who lives on the second floor of the house near where the victim was found. "I ran there. I saw it was my nephew just laying there."
The victim's aunt said she heard two shots.
The cause of death was still under investigation late Thursday night. There were some signs the gunshot wound could have been self-inflicted, Lt. Silva said, but at this time the incident is being treated as an open investigation.
The victim lived with his mother in Dartmouth; his father lived in the house on Rivet Street, according to Lt. Silva.
Nuno Luis, who lives across the street from the victim's father's house, was standing outside his house around 9:30 p.m. and saw the victim come out of his father's house.
Mr. Luis finished his cigarette and went inside. Shortly thereafter, he heard a bang.
"I ran outside, see him lying on the floor," said Mr. Luis. Mr. Luis said he immediately called the police.
The victim's aunt said she had just seen her nephew Wednesday and that he was downstairs talking to his father Thursday night.
"He was a good, good kid," the aunt said.
