HAMILTON - A 33-year-old Ipswich man was charged with his fifth offense of drunken driving yesterday following a pair of car crashes that sent him and three others to the hospital.
Francis R. Abram was held overnight at Beverly Hospital with no bail and is expected to be arraigned at Salem District Court today if doctors release him.
A hospital spokeswoman said last night Abram and an 80-year-old local woman, who was initially trapped in her Chevy pickup, are listed in good condition. The driver and passenger in the third vehicle were treated and released.
Police said the two crashes happened at about 3:30 p.m. when Abram, heading west on Asbury Street near the Topsfield town line, crossed the center travel lane and "sideswiped" a 1995 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Veronica Sargent of Hamilton. The impact sent Sargent's pickup into the guardrail.
Then, police said, Abram continued west in his 1989 Ford Bronco in the wrong lane, riding along the guardrail for 222 feet until he struck a 2007 Honda CRV driven by Kathy L. Brown, 49, of Ipswich.
Brown and her passenger, Robert Brown, 60, also of Ipswich, were treated and released.
Hamilton firefighters had to use hydraulic extraction tools to remove the driver's-side door of Sargent's pickup in order to free her.
Fire Deputy Chief Dan Parsons said it took firefighters less than five minutes to remove the door. Hamilton Police Ambulance and two ambulances from Lyons in Beverly transported the injured motorists to the hospital.
The crash closed Asbury Street in both directions as Hamilton police Sgt. Don Dupray and Patrolman Arthur Hatfield investigated the crashes. Wenham and Topsfield police assisted detouring traffic for about an hour until the road reopened.
Along with the drunken-driving charge, Detective Ken Nagy also charged Abram with driving after revocation and a marked lane violation. Police said more charges may be filed.
