Man seen lurking around school, attempted abduction reported in Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. -- Police are investigating an attempted abduction in Swampscott. The man has also been seen lurking around a school.
On Tuesday, he attempted to lure an 11-year-old boy into his car, police said.
"He was like saying for me to come to the car and get in," said Chad Nelson, who escaped the alleged abductor. "I turned and ran all the way down a path."
The incident happened as he walked home from school, just one day after a man with the same description was seen in a car, in a parking lot at Swampscott Middle School.
"He was seen while students were in gym, it was very brief," said Swampscott Superintendent Matt Malone.
The school district sent letters home to parents, warning them to be on the lookout.
The suspect was driving an older model tan four-door vehicle. He's described as a white male in his 50's with a thin build. He has messy salt and pepper colored hair with a full gray beard and mustache.
Police are still searching for the man. If anyone has any information, please call Swampscott Police at 781-595-1111.

Police seek suspect in child abduction attempt
By Mike Stucka

SWAMPSCOTT - Police distributed sketches and Swampscott students took home letters yesterday warning of a possible abduction attempt on an 11-year-old boy on Tuesday.
Police said the boy did the right thing when he ran away and hid after a man asked him to approach his car, then told police about the incident afterward. The boy also said he'd seen the same man and the same car the day before at Swampscott Middle School, watching students from his car, police said.
Detective Sgt. Tim Cassidy, department spokesman, said the man was in his car on Jessie Street when he tried to get the boy to come to him.
The man "yelled out to him, 'Hey, come here!' The kid said, 'No, I gotta go.' The man yelled, 'No, come here,' and the kid ran and hid in a backyard," Cassidy said.
Cassidy said the boy did the right thing: "Do what the boy did: Run, make a lot of noise, notify an adult as soon as possible. ... He didn't go to the car when the guy told him to come there, so he did a great job."
On both days, the man was driving an older tan four-door sedan, similar to a Ford Tempo. He is described as a thinly built man in his 50s with messy salt-and-pepper hair. He also has a gray beard, mustache and glasses, with a mark on his left cheek. On Tuesday, he was wearing a black-and-red plaid shirt with a rolled-up sleeve.
The man also apparently was driving around town. Jessie Street, site of Tuesday's incident, is behind Machon School and the new Swampscott High School. On Monday, the man was reportedly at the new site of Swampscott Middle School, the old Swampscott High on Forest Avenue. The two locations are more than a mile apart.
In a letter to parents of all students, Superintendent Matthew Malone wrote that "If you or your child have any information concerning this incident, or any incident of an uncomfortable or threatening nature, please contact the Swampscott Police or the school building principal." The Swampscott Police Department can be reached by calling 911 or the non-emergency phone number, 781-595-1111.

Police fielding tips in child-abduction attempt
By Bruno Matarazzo Jr.

SWAMPSCOTT - Tips and possible sightings of a bearded, middle-aged man involved in an attempted abduction of an 11-year-old boy this week have been pouring in to police.
On Tuesday, a man in his car on Jessie Street reportedly yelled out to a boy, "Hey, come here." The boy told police he had seen the same man the day before.
The man, who wore glasses and had a scar left cheek, was driving a older tan four-door sedan. He is described as in his 50s with a thin build, messy salt-and-pepper hair, and a gray beard and mustache.
Following the release of a sketch on Tuesday, police received numerous tips.
"We got numerous reports of possible sightings, none of which have panned out," police Sgt. Tim Cassidy said.
One of possible sightings happened on Banks Road on Wednesday, when two middle school students reported a man matching the description walking toward them. The man didn't say anything to the students, who later notified police.
