First Hand gun suggestions

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I have recently joined an Auxiliary Police department and will be taking the next exam to join the regulars. So I am trying to narrow down my options on a hand gun, I want one that I can use on duty and carry easily concealed when off duty… I need to keep it under $500 and It cant be any larger than a .40 cal.…I was thinking these

Ref. Glock 19
Ref. Glock 22
M+P 9 or 40
M+P 9 or 40 compact
Used Sig 226

Any suggestions?

glock 23. smaller than a glock 22 but still .40

Look into the Springfield series. I have an XD-40 sub-compact for off duty. It's a great gun at under 500$, go to a range that rents out guns and decide what's best for you.

As a cop you can get a new glock for under $500....in fact $429 or $489.

i love my Glock 23 and have carried it for almost 16 years,The nice thing is if you have a Glock 27 for a second piece that the magazines from the 23 will function in it...something no other manufacture does.Nice thing about a Glock is you aim it at the target , pull the trigger and it goes bang, the trigger pull never changes and no safeties to screw with.the bad thinabout the Glock is there are no safeties to screw with so weapons retention is a BIG DEAL.You cant go wrong with a Sig either!

If you don't plan to practice a lot (be honest), get the Glock 19. Its cheap, reliable and the kick is mild. The 9mm round is easy to learn to shoot well with, and ammunition is cheap. There are a number of 9mm rounds that are excellent performers vs. people. The Glock series are renowned for their resistance to "cop maintainance" (i.e. none). I owned a Glock 19 for nearly 10 years before I sold it, and it was an fine weapon.

I've fired the M&P series in .40, and found it to be an excellent pistol, and very accurate. Several departments have switched from the Glock or Sig to the S&W M&P, and I feel this weapon will make a big impact on the firearms community. Still, it is harder to get accessories and equipment for the M&P because its a relatively new weapon, whereas Glock accessories are dirt cheap. Sig Sauers are, of course, excellent pistols, but you're not likely to find one for under $500.

As someone else mentioned, the best method is to find someone who knows something about guns (not, I learned from playing Grand Theft Auto, but police or military types), and go shooting. Guns are like cars, you shouldn't buy one without a test drive.

GLOCK 23 is your best choice for the money, ease of use and dependability.

I cant believe nobody besides Killjoy mentioned SIG.
Is it primarily a price issue or is it just not that highly ranked as a weapon in the LE community?
I love the 2 I have.

Sigs are great I have one P229 but they are kind of heavy and bulky for an off duty, an assume firearm ergonomicly the best weapon for a duty weapon.

For your first gun go Glock light weight less bulky in my opinion

I have to carry a SIG, but I don't particuarly like them. They're top-quality pistols, but just don't feel right in my hand.

Koz

I too have fired a sig and liked it very much but I think the issue on them in this thread is the $500 cap.

Mikey - maybe if I took the time to read Ratsnest's post a little more closely I would have noticed that ...

Koz I'll let it slid this time but next time off with your head!

Posted by: Ratsnest

thanks for the replies, I am going to hit a range and rent some to see what I like

size is also an issue since I would like something that i can carry off duty..

one of the gun shops near me has a used Sig 226 for $500 but that seems a bit big...
