SPRINGFIELD - The 35 graduates of the Western Massachusetts Police Academy who are beginning their careers after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks "are torchbearers clearing the way through the uncertainties of the new millennium," staff instructor Capt. Ronald P. Campurciani of the West Springfield Police Department said.
Campurciani made the closing remarks after the graduation ceremony held yesterday at Springfield Technical Community College.
He said the officers are starting their careers at an unparalleled time in the country's history.

"These officers are prepared for a new terror," Campurciani said. He said they would risk their lives "for every person in the room."
He told the police officers that their family and friends will be there for them when they have doubts about their profession, even though they did not choose their professions for them.
"They will be lying in bed waiting for you to come home," he said. "Make sure you go home."
Campurciani also paid tribute to John M. Claffey, the director of the Western Massachusetts Police Academy who, Campurciani said, "has set a high watermark for the academy and will make it one of the most exceptional police academies in the state."
John J. Parnell, who will be going to work for the Holyoke Police Department, graduated first in the class and was the president of the class.
He said the 21-week police academy was strenuous, but created great camaraderie among the class.
"It was a long 21 weeks, but we finally made it," he said.
Claffey said that when the police academy in Agawam closed in 2005 because the building was structurally deficient, it created the opportunity for a partnership between the academy and Springfield Technical Community College.
The academy is waiting for Building 11, its permanent home on campus, to be completed, Claffey said.
Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray said the new police officers should be "proactive in the lives of ordinary people" and be "a stabilizing force in the community."
