An undercover drug bust went down in Orlando Monday night. Drug agents said they caught a man with more than five grams of heroin. Investigators said it is part of their plan to crack down on crime.
The joint effort is called the Violent Crime Intervention Task Force. It was put together soon after the number of drug-related shootings and murders in Orlando kept climbing like never before.
South Orange Blossom Trail is known by law enforcement officials for prostitution and illegal drug activity. Anthony walks down OBT on his way to work every morning.
"I try to mind my own business and just walk right through," Anthony said.
Monday night, the Orlando Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and agents with the ATF arrested a man for trafficking at least five grams of heroin, which police said was a significant amount.
"We had an informant come down here and end up buying some heroin in the 7-Eleven parking lot," said Sgt. Kurt Mybre of the Orlando Police Department.
In the grand scheme of things, one drug bust may appear to be a drop in the bucket, but OPD is cracking down and cleaning up the area, hoping to send a message.
"We're trying to hit it as hard as we can, looking for guns and drugs, and they travel together. We've got the assistance of the ATF federal agents on the task force who have been here for over a month," Mybre said.
Agents said it was a significant bust because the arrest comes with a minimum seven-year sentence if convicted.
