AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities found the bodies of four people Sunday night in a home northwest of Austin, a sheriff's spokesman said.
Travis County Sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said the cause of death had not been determined, but was believed to be "homicide times four."
Sheriff's investigators were assisting the Jonestown Police Department in securing the area and had attained a search warrant to enter the house late Sunday, Wade said.
Officers responding to a call to the home found the bodies in the home in a Jonestown subdivision, about 15 miles northwest of Austin.
"Some people called the Jonestown Police Department to see if they could check on the welfare of a family member," Wade said.
The people were pronounced dead at about 9:30 p.m. EDT.
Wade did not have information on the identities, age or gender of the dead. He said it has not been determined when the people died.
Authorities had not announced any suspects in the case.
"They want to look at the evidence before we start announcing suspects," Wade said.
Wade described the area as "a subdivision with large lots, lot of trees, in the hills between Lago Vista and Jonestown. It's got some high-dollar houses up in here. It's all houses in among the cedar trees of northwestern Travis County."

AUSTIN (AP) -- A man suspected in the killings of four people in a home near the Texas state capitol and in a fatal shooting in a bar in that state was arrested by U.S. marshals on Monday on eastern Long Island.
Paul Devoe III was arrested in Shirley, N.Y., and was charged with murder in connection with a shooting in a bar in Marble Falls, Texas, last Friday. Details of that killing were not immediately provided by authorities.
Devoe, 43, also was held on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, said Supervisory Deputy Marshal Hector Gomez.
Devoe was identified by Gomez as a suspect in the quadruple killing, although the Travis County district attorney and sheriff's office did not immediately say whether they were planning to file charges against Devoe in those homicides.
Authorities did not immediately have information on whether Devoe, who was being held, was represented by an attorney.
Officers in northwest Austin found the four dead bodies Sunday evening after a relative called police to check on a family member's welfare, Travis County sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade said. Medical examiners were working Monday to identify the four victims and determine the causes of death.
Devoe had a history of arrests for minor crimes, including aggravated harassment, criminal trespassing and petit larceny in 2003, said a spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney on Long Island. He was sentenced to 20 months behind bars following a drunken-driving arrest in 1997 and served five years probation, spokesman Robert Clifford said.
Saddened neighbors in Austin waited for confirmation on who was slain. They said a woman and her teenage daughter lived in the home.
"It's unnerving and scary,'' said neighbor Brenda Sies, who lives near the house but said she didn't see or hear anything unusual over the weekend. "Everybody is very sad and worried that a murder can take place when we're within a couple of hundred feet.''
When police arrived Sunday to investigate and search the area, they asked residents to remain indoors in case the killer was still around, Sies said.
"It was pretty tense,'' she said. "They had their guns drawn sometimes so, of course, we were inside. ... Everybody went in their house and locked their doors.''

Man Suspected in 5 Texas Killings Arrested on Long Island

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- A man wanted in the deaths of six people in Texas and Pennsylvania had suffered a rattlesnake bite days before the cross-country killing spree and had psychological problems, his family said Monday.
"We feel it's a psychological stupor he was in,'' an uncle, Ed Nelson, said outside court before a Long Island judge ordered the extradition of Paul Devoe III to Texas.
Nelson said he felt a combination of the snake bite, medication and alcohol caused the stupor.
Devoe's mother, Diana O'Connell, said her son called her saying, "Mom, I'm in trouble. I'm on the run.''

"He was not in a right mind,'' said O'Connell, adding that Devoe also called his sister and told her, "I'm in trouble.''
"My brother is not an animal,'' said a brother, Steven Devoe. "He's mentally disturbed in the head. I wish the people in Texas would take this into consideration: Spare his life. Don't kill the man.''
Before Suffolk County Judge C. Randall Hinrichs issued his order, both New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and his counterpart in Texas, Rick Perry, had signed extradition warrants to send Devoe back to Texas to face murder charges.
Devoe ''understood. He had time to think this over,'' his lawyer, Ed Vitali, said of the extradition.
Devoe, 44, is wanted in the killings of an ex-girlfriend, 46-year-old Paula Griffith; her 15-year-old daughter, Haylie Marie Faulkner; 17-year-old Danielle Hensley; and Griffith's boyfriend, 48-year-old Jay Feltner, at a home near Austin on Aug. 26. Preliminary autopsy reports found all four were killed by gunshots to the head.
He also is a suspect in the death of Marble Falls, Texas, bartender Michael Jay Allred, 41, two days earlier.
Pennsylvania authorities have charged Devoe with killing Betty Jane Dehart, 81, at her rural home in Greencastle. He allegedly confessed to authorities that he shot Dehart and stole her car to continue his trip from Texas to Long Island, where he was arrested on Aug. 27 at a friend's home in Shirley.
Before his arrest, Devoe called his mother in New York using a cell phone that belonged to Feltner and told her he had killed five people, the arrest warrant affidavit said.
Spota has described Devoe as "a felon with a long history of arrests'' in Suffolk County including aggravated harassment, criminal trespassing, petit larceny and drunken driving
