Cambridge - A kitchen fight at a restaurant at Lesley University nearly turned deadly Saturday morning as one employee strangled his boss in a clash over cookies.
Police arrested Jose R. Arevalo, 37, of 15 Royal St., Allston and charged him with assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and threat to commit a crime.
Police responded to the Bon Appetit restaurant at 31 Everett St. inside Lesley College Sept. 8 at 8:59 a.m. and found a 30-year-old Brighton woman with a fresh, bright red scratch on the left side of her neck.
The victim, a catering manager for Bon Appetit, told police she asked Arevalo, one of her employees, to platter a tray of cookies, but Arevalo told her it wasn’t his job and walked away, according to reports.
The victim followed Arevalo, telling him it was his job, but Arevalo allegedly cursed the victim with several expletives, police said. Arevala allegedly screamed at the victim that he wasn’t listening to her because she was a woman and allegedly told her he would take care of her later, according to police reports.
Arevalo walked into the walk-in refrigerator during the course of he argument and when the victim opened the door, Arevalo allegedly lunged at her, shoved her back and grabbing her neck, squeezing hard enough to take the victim’s breath away, police said.
Arevalo then allegedly threw the victim into the walk-in door while still strangling her, according to police report. Arevalo only let go of the victim’s neck after one of the sous chefs pushed Arevalo off her, according to police reports.
Arevalo allegedly continued to swear at the victim until he left the restaurant, according to police reports. As he was leaving Arevalo allegedly shouted to the victim that he knew where she lived and that he would get her, police said.
The sous chef told police the argument between Arevalo and the victim was mostly in Spanish, but she understood Arevalo shouting mostly swears and the word “respect.”
The victim told police she thought Arevalo would have killed her if the sous chef hadn’t intervened, according to reports. The sous chef also told police she was “afraid [Arevalo] was going to kill [the victim], he was so angry. If he could’ve reached a knife he certainly would have killed her,” according to police reports.
Police took photos of the victim’s neck as evidence.
