SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- The Sandy Springs police chief has recommended his own suspension after an altercation with a suspect was caught on tape.A police dash board camera showed a driver being pulled over after being clocked at 92 MPH on I-285 at 6 a.m. on a rainy November morning. The dash cam catches an officer telling the driver to stay in the car. The camera shows she ignored the order to stay in the car.He said he tried to put her on the ground and handcuff her but she kept fighting. He used pepper spray and a baton and then called for help.Sandy Springs Police Chief Gene Wilson said he heard the officer's call for help in his office."One of my officers was putting out a signal 63 on 285. (Sixty-three) is an officer needs help, it's the most serious call that I think a police officer can hear," said Wilson.Other officers arrived and helped put the driver into the patrol car and the camera records as the chief gets there, opens the door, talks angrily and the conversation eventually escalates to cursing."I think I let emotion get the best of me," said Wilson. The next day, he recommended himself for a two-day suspension and apologized to his department."I was embarrassed about it then, I'm embarrassed about it now. And I have done everything that I know to do to say, from a professional standpoint, that I have made a mistake," said Wilson. The next day the chief went to roll calls on all three shifts and apologized to officers for his conduct. The chief said he took his suspension recommendation to the city manager and he and the manager had a long talk. Wilson said the city manager said if he ever did anything like that again, he would enforce the two day suspension.Copyright 2007 by WSBTV.com
