Police nab shoplifting subject who fled to tree

PEABODY - A shoplifting arrest turned into a bigger ordeal when a Winthrop man decided to run away and, eventually, climb a tree.
Patrolman Gerry Fitzgerald was responding to Sears at the Northshore Mall for a shoplifting incident shortly after 5 p.m. when police say Vincent Savarese, 21, took off running through the mall parking lot and into a small parcel of woods nearby.
Savarese was being detained by store security as Fitzgerald approached the store. That's when Savarese started running, police Sgt. Al Lopes said.
Police feared Savarese would attempt to try and cross Route 128, which abuts the woods.
Instead, he climbed up a tree, Lopes said, but Fitzgerald found Savarese and arrested him.
Lopes said three other cruisers responded to the mall to assist Fitzgerald.
Because Savarese ran from police, he faces more charges.
"If he just stayed he might have been arrested for (the shoplifting charge) or summonsed to court, but he decided to bolt so he's going to be in more hot water than he should have been," Lopes said. Now Savarese faces charges of larceny (more than $250), resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
He was released from police custody on personal recognizance and will be arraigned today at Peabody District Court.
