Chowder, jazz and art served up on Riverwalk tomorrow

IPSWICH - From the day the Riverwalk was conceived, it was envisioned as a means of renewing the town's ties to the Ipswich River and as a destination that would lure residents and nonresidents alike downtown. This weekend will be a good test of whether it has achieved those goals.
The annual Lions Club Chowderfest is moving from Market Street to the EBSCO parking lot and the Riverwalk that passes through it this Saturday. Twelve restaurants from as far away as Cambridge will be serving up samples of New England's signature soup.
New this year is a panel of celebrity judges, including radio talk show hosts Pat Whitley and Howie Carr, Legal Seafoods owner Roger Berkowitz, and Town Manager Bob Markel.
Also new this year is the musical entertainment, which will be provided by The Treble Makers, a Dixieland jazz ensemble.
The biggest complaint at past chowderfests has been the long wait at each tasting booth, which organizers hope they're reducing.
"We're trying to have more than one line at each restaurant this year," Lions Club President Jane Mulloy said.
Another incentive for festivalgoers is a grab bag of goodies supplied by local stores that will be handed out to the first 1,500 ticket buyers.
A number of local nonprofits will also be represented during the day. "We're trying to make it more than a chowderfest," Mulloy said.
The festival is sponsored by the Institution for Savings, TD Banknorth and EBSCO Publishing.
The Riverwalk will be a happening place this weekend, with the annual Art Show and Sale in EBSCO's Riverfront CafÉ tomorrow and Sunday and also, the annual ArtWalk celebrated in numerous galleries and other venues throughout town.
