Sorry, missed that.

Posted by: 20MustangGT01

Has anyone taken this test? Is it like a standard civil service test or is it one of those tests that asks basic math and english skills? Do I dare ask, does Northborough already have there candidates picked out and this test is just a waste of everyone elses time?

Posted by: Foxy85

Rumor has it they ar hurting for guys, that being said, I don't think they have guys "lined" up per se, but I bet that a dispatcher wanting to move up will get preference or someone that knows someone on the department...

Will be interesting to se how many people sign up for the test....

I signed up for shits and grins, but we'll see what happens...I have alot on my plate right now....But the experience of taking an exam never hurts....

Hey how does the hiring process work in Northboro....

Take the test, take a PAT then interviews?

Whats their PAt like? Is it the state PAT with the obstacle course, or their own variation.....

Hows their pay scale?

Thanks!

Posted by: Foxy85

I suprised, no responses? Any Northboro P.D. guys out there?

Posted by: redsox03

Anyone else take the test today?

Posted by: Foxy85

Yeah, I took it on Saturday, was a little bit different than what I've taken before, I've taken about 5 tests now....Wasn't overly difficult....the dissapointing factor though....Only top 40 make it to PAT....and thats after he told us that out of the 100-120 people that showed up about 18 of them already had the FT academy....

BAH!

Posted by: redsox03

We should know by Friday if we made it to the PAT.

Posted by: Foxy85

I'm curious as to what they do with tie scores...it wasn't an overly difficult test....so i am thinking there will be a lot of high scores...

Posted by: JLT770

18 with full academy? for how many slots? wow talk about a new guy having a slim to no chance

Posted by: badgebunny

I was suppose to take it, but I worked soooo many hours this past week and a double on Friday...I was soooo /tired, I slept through my alarm and missed it!

I doubt that is the number of people with the MPTC academy. On the application form, it just asked if you were certified (Which I read as Warranted) as a Full Time Police Officer. I went through the SSPO, and checked it. There were several campus campus officers there, and if they checked it as well... Probably about half of that number have the Municipal. It was clear that he was willing to send people if they were right for the job.

There were 18 full-time academy graduates that took the test. There were many of you with reserve intermittent academy training as well as SSPOs. Believe it or not there will be those that will fail the written test or fail to reach a score high enough to be included in the top 40 which, in and of itself is a part of the screening process as it will eliminate a number of applicants. Of those who are invited back for the department physical abilities testing, there will be those who fail that as well as has happened in the past. It is sometimes surprising who fails the physical testing as some are people you least expect to fail. It is expected that five full-time positions will be filled from the list created by this process. A lieutenant is retiring which will result in a sergeants promotional thus creating a patrol position. There is an existing patrol vacancy as well. The town also entered into an mitigation funding agreement with the developer of a recently started expansive residential and retail mall project. The agreement provides for the funding of three new full-time patrol positions. So, If you have resigned yourself to being excluded because you lack the full-time academy perhaps you sell yourself short. What you need to focus on is getting yourself to the oral board stage and then convince us that you are the candidate we need and why we should invest the time, training and expense in you. Have you ever considered why, in a time where the trend among Chief's has been to hire academy graduates, there are unemployed academy grads? The cream rises to the top. Perhaps they are not the cream we are looking for.

Currently the bargaining agreement is expired and negotiations are underway for a successor agreement so these numbers will not be static for long:
07-01-06
Step 1 40,509.67
Step 2 42,533.93
Step 3 44,665.11
Step 4 46,897.06
Step 5 49,242.12
Steps are awarded anually.
Quinn Bill educational incentive pay additional.
4 hour minimums on court OT, Details etc...

This information is publicly available just call and ask. Its' all public record.

Posted by: Foxy85

We'll see, the Chief seemed like a good shit, but if he can save a buck, i bet you he will....

Posted by: SSPO#11

Hey Northborough,

You sound quite sure that EVERY full-time cop without a job is not good enough for your ELITE police department. Do yourself a favor and don't insult some of the good police officers who HAVE the academy on this board looking to get on.

Posted by: futureMSP

I didn't get that from what he said....I thought he simply meant there are people out there with full-time academy training with no employment. I agree that just because somebody has a full-time academy doesn't mean their number one hiring spot material. Maybe they have the training but aren't a fit for the department, or maybe they have something in their background that is bad. There are a lot of variables.

The Chief is a good guy, I have never worked for him but know him.

Posted by: SSPO#11

You didn't get that?

Have you ever considered why, in a time where the trend among Chief's has been to hire academy graduates, there are unemployed academy grads? The cream rises to the top. Perhaps they are not the cream we are looking for.

In some cases he is right...there are bad cops with the full-time academy but the blanket statement was not called for.

Do you honestly think you are going to identify the CREAM after a written exam and PT test. You could get 40 book smart kids out of college and go out on the street and be clueless.

if you read the topic correctly, you would see that they put the faith in oral boards and not to sell yourself short.

pay attention.

Posted by: SSPO#11

Hey 94C....I read the topic correctly and I copied and pasted what he said. So read it again, and YOU pay attention. You must have taken the test.....go be the CREAM.

Posted by: Bobbahead12

Hi,
I took the test and I recall they said they would try to post test results on their website by Friday if the testing company had the results back..Does anyone know if there is a link on their site I am missing or they have not posted them yet? I still see the test application pdf on the site...Thanks in advance.

You seem to be taking this really personally. Let's all just agree to stop saying CREAM in capital letters. It's not right.

Posted by: Bobbahead12

Hi....again..Did anyone receive their scores? Maybe they changed their minds and only notifying top 40?? Both dept and town websites have not been updated. If this question is posted in the wrong area please let me know. Thanks!

Posted by: JP64

Website updated, says that the scores will be posted Thursday the 4th.

Posted by: JLT770

wow, sept 22 test with scores on oct 4, is that possible in this state? haha

Posted by: 5-0

Scores are posted. See you Saturday folks.

Needed a 93 or higher to move on.

Posted by: Foxy85

Lol.... Someone got a 37..... LMFAO

Posted by: j809

NPD is looking for a combination of Bachelor's Degreee minimum coupled with a FT academy. I know at least one officer on there that put himself through the academy but was also finishing his master's degree. That is what they want. AS far as sending people to the academy, maybe, depending on who is left.

Yeah, I was waiting for someone to point that out. I was shocked that there was anything below an 85.

For days I and my wife have been checking the northborough site for the results. Friday night my wife stays at her friends house and the next morning calls me telling me the results had been up for days (she used her friends computer) and that the exam was at 8.00am and i was on the list. I jump in my car go there and get there just after the doors have been closed to be told "try again next time". I come home, look online and sure enough, it says on a pdf, that the results are going to come out on Thursday. We cleaned all the cookies and cached files and sure enough..there were the results!

I have just got out of the Marines as a SGT and returned from Iraq just before getting out. I have been dead set on joining the police as soon as I get out and needless to say i am crushed.

I know for sure I could of passed that exam, without a shadow of a doubt..

I just wish there was something else I could do.

Posted by: JLT770

hope you werent the 38

Good Luck. Just out of curiousity what were the kinds of questions they asked?

Posted by: okie317

Anyone that took the PT test last week hear anything yet?

Posted by: Foxy85

My buddy passed everything, BUT the sit and reach....he was pissed....pretty lame if you ask me....oh well.....

Posted by: JLT770

what does the sit and reach test against? beer bellies? no offense to your friend of course...im just wondering

Posted by: Foxy85

Not quite sure....I mean he did the 1.5, push-up,sit-ups and bench.....

I know you're probably being a smart-ass, but I believe it tests flexability, and checks for back problems.....either way...to pass everything and fail on that just sucks big balls.....

Posted by: COto50

the sit and reach tests lower back flexability.

I missed your post earlier, the test was a little bit different than normal. Basic math/reading comp stuff, but at the end there was a section where you had to write sentances. I am not sure how they scored that. The other thing is that the test sections were timed, so I am sure that screwed people who have test anxiety...

As for the people who passed the PT. Congrats, and good luck at your interviews. This process has been very professional and streamlined. It says a lot about the department.

Posted by: okie317

5-0, did you hear anything yet? I'm just curious I haven't heard anything yet and I'm getting nervous! After the PT test was done we just left and no one said about how or when we would be contacted for the interview.

i know someone who took the written and physical exams and has gotten a letter in the mail (interview).

anyone else get one?

NORTHBOROUGH -
Nearly 200 people expressed interest in the five openings on the Northborough Police Department, Chief Mark Leahy said, and 22 who survived the written and physical tests will soon begin the interview process.
The town will fill two spots on the force that opened with the retirement of officers, Leahy said, and three more will be added to deal with the large new development - The Loop shopping center and AvalonBay apartment complex.
After limiting recent searches only to candidates who have already gone through the police academy, Leahy decided to broaden the pool. He was taken aback by the response he received.
"We were surprised. We figured maybe 100, 125 (would apply)," Leahy said. "There are so many towns now that are only interviewing people that have graduated from the academy and we have tried to do that several times, but that pool is really shrinking."
The written entrance exam was taken by 174 people, and the town took the top 48 finishers, Leahy said. They were planning to take the top 40 for the physical exam, but there was a tie so they invited a few more.
Of those, 36 showed up for the physical exam and 22 passed, Leahy said. That group is going into the interview stage.
"They have been invited back next week to be interviewed by a panel of three sergeants, two patrolmen and our administrative assistant," Leahy said. "That will be followed by a smaller group of (candidates), maybe 10, who will be interviewed by myself and the two members of the Board of Selectmen."
The downside to hiring people who haven't gone through the academy, Leahy said, is they will need training.
"This is a long process. We have the academy, which is 20 weeks, and once they graduate, they come back here for 10 weeks of field training with a veteran officer," Leahy said.
Leahy can hire one officer as soon as possible, and a second one next month. The three additional officers will have to wait, but Leahy hopes to have them on board sooner rather than later.
"Ideally, we would have at least two appointed by the end of the year," Leahy said. "The other three as soon as we can."
The three additional officers will be paid for by mitigation money provided by the developers of The Loop and AvalonBay. Leahy said the money will start coming to the town when the developers pull their first building permits.
The additional members of the force will allow the department to put one more officer on the streets, Leahy said. The town typically had three patrol districts, but a fourth may be added that would cover the area around the new development, the area around Wal-Mart and the Rte. 9/Rte. 20 interchange.
"I'm supposed to have three officers for three years. I'm in pretty good shape for that," Leahy said. "I believe with their impact on the community there will probably be little argument against keeping them."

Tough place to work, tough management. Good luck to everyone.

Posted by: lioness

Congrats to everyone whom made it to and through the first round of the interview process.

Just wondering if anyone has heard back/gotten letters yet for Round 2? Or know when this should be happening?

Any insight would be appreciated; thanks!

Posted by: Candidate

Not sure if I made it past round 1. I haven't heard anything either way. Good luck to those who make it, it's a squared away department.

Posted by: lioness

Yeah...still no word on this end yet...

This is a very nerve-wracking process. I wonder how long it'll take for the next round to know/receive letters

Posted by: Slider

Has anyone heard anything or received a letter to interview with the chief/selectmen yet? This waiting is brutal!
