Deferments, and a new Test

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Posted by: TMONEY

Does anyone know what they do with the deferments list if they give a new test? One person told me they will keep the list active, until it is exhausted, and someone else told me that the list get dumped after a new test. I would appreciate any solid info about this, because I am a 95er who got unwillingly defered, and am now over 35. Thanks

Posted by: RodneyFarva

it gets dumped after a new test... oh and if you have'nt already, start running!

Posted by: d02461

If they are dumping the list when there is a new test then what are you going to run for? Oh yeah sounds like somebody is trying to re-hash the same old post..........80RTT lol

Posted by: JLT770

cause its always good to run and be in shape, as for rehashing the 80th RTT posts/threads i wouldn't recommend it

They find all people on the deferment list and kill them.

Posted by: Badge 2

JUst a question! Keep in mind I'm jealous to start with!
Why would someone defer when given this opportunity? I mean I think I can think of a couple of reasons but what do you see as the most common reason someone would defer?
Thanks.
Last is there any chance they are going to move up the Age requirement (yes I am over 35)

From what I've been told, you take a financial hit during the Academy. Pay rate is like 50%, so if your finances aren't in order before you go in you could have trouble by the end. I would guess some wound defer to beef up the bank accounts. Also family issues (pending births or ill relatives), being in school and having to finish classes, work or military commitments would be factors to consider.

This was my situation when the 77th RTT was gearing up...Was only a sophomore in college and knew I needed to finish up, so I deferred...That class was eventually delayed 2 years due to lack of funding, but I deferred a 2nd time because I had just signed a 1 year lease that I wouldn't have been able to afford if I left for the SPA...Thankfully, the 78th RTT came around not too long after the 77th graduated, so it all worked out.

I'd say it's time for a new test, enough with this list already. The youngest a candidate could be is 27 at this point, assuming you had to be 20 to take the exam (which is what I thought it was, I can't recall)...We'll see what happenes next summer, that's the talk as of now...

I'm deferred to the 80th, and I'm 24.
I took that exam @ 18, scored a 95.

Posted by: SinePari

Correct me if I'm wrong, but an approved medical deferment from a previous RTT (physically attended, not on paper), or an active duty military commitment are the only 2 deferments acceptable if they give a new test.

You had to be 19 to take the test, not 18.

Posted by: TMONEY

I think you're right SinePari, that would explain the two answers I got from my sources, thank you. Time to get my mileage in for the day. My friends ask me why all the running, and I just tell them I'm training for a marathon. LOL

Okay, I'm a meathead. I was 19.

Point is, 27 is a few years off for the minimum age of a current candiate.

Posted by: mino0583

Yeah your right because the youngest anyone could be that the test is 24, I made the deadline by one day and I'm 24

The last test was scheduled in 2002, and you had to be only 18 then? Was that before the law changed to 21? I'm an old fart so I was looking at the other end of the cut-off age when I applied.

Posted by: misconceived

I belive the law was changed in '04??

Posted by: TMONEY

I feel they should change the age requirement for the test. The original idea was that you do at least twenty years of service, and retire by age 55. That has been changed, and troopers can stay just about as long as they want, I know of one person staying to seventy, so the 35 rule, should be thrown out as well.- just my 2 pennies

Looking for some info on the state police academy. I heard a lot of people drop out on the first day. If you've waited your whole life for this opportunity, why the high washout rate? I don't get it. Also, with 10 being the hardest and 0 the lowest, how would the state police academy rate and how would the municipal police academy rate? Is it harder than Parris Island marine corp. bootcamp? Thanks for any information in advance...What do you think about this, JLT770?

Posted by: JLT770

well since you called me out i think people just aren't mentally or perhaps physically prepared? as others have said they drop off for a number of reasons, financial, family illness or death. you might wanna check out the thread about Reserve vs Full Academy. Now i know this isnt EXACTLY what you were looking for but its a good place to start.

Thanks

With 10 being the most stupid and 0 being intelligent: I give you a 10 on your rating system. You take tests and do your best wherever you may get a chance. Forget how hard/easy things are. The local police and state police have different policing styles and their respective academies are geared to prepare their recruits for their future job.

Recruits show up at the SPA and have no idea what to expect. It is a serious gut check. To add to this, the weaklings are given a chance to take their ball & go home -- many do. I thank god every day that I know I am not being backed up by some loser who cant take a little yelling.

I was looking for some info - not to get insulted. Anyways, is the state police academy like Full Metal Jacket, or is it like Stripes with Sergeant Hulka and Bill Murray with shenanagins? What kinds of tactics do they use to weed out the weak? What does a typical day consist of? Thanks.

Is this is a smart enough question to post, MM1799? Next time I have a question, I'll PM you first and get your prior approval because you seem to know everything.

Go get another OUI and leave us alone.

What a donkey. If you're not looking to get insulted then stop asking ridiculous stupid questions. Do you really believe the SPA would be like ANY movie? If so kid, move on and go sell insurance.

Jackass.

Wow! For someone who is inquiring what an RTT is like (and would presumably like to attend one someday), you sure are one cocky piece of sh*t. Even using the MSP's codes, you must know everything.

Here's a piece of advice: If you want to get on the MSP, try to maintain a low profile...the DI's will find out who you are if you are ever lucky enough to go to the SPA

Posted by: MDSP2597

Let me give you some friendly advice me young ladde mechanixman, your temper will get you in a fix and you will not be joining our profession at all. Trying to pick fights over the net, being a smartass with sworn Troopers is not a smart move, especially if you want to be a Trooper. It also applies to being a Local Officer too, if you are not aware cops talk to one another and once you on the radar it is hard to get off of it. Labels are hard to get rid of once they have been place upon you. Calm cool heads prevail, think about it. Best of luck with your future.

Posted by: BIG IRISH

Mechanixman you're probably related to that piece of sh*t "Curtatone" so go f**k yourself!! You must be one of those "Winter Hill" tough guys. I'll bet you're and inbred from Cambridge!!
