Was watching Zodiac last night and they mentioned something about how in California there aren't too many houses that have basements. Anyone know why?

A lot of homes were built in the "boom" days after the war. To that end slab construction was much cheaper and more importantly FASTER to build.

Land used to be realitively cheap out west ( I grew up in Nevada) and it was easier and cheaper to just sprawl the house on the property rather than dig(or blast) a basement...thats changed though because land has become much more valuable .

thanks guys...and I read that Florida is the same way but I'd guess thats b/c of the water table down there

Yeah similar in NC. I have a rare (not really) home with a basement. I was told they are not common because of the red clay soil.

No basements? Where the hell do you go to hide from the wife and kids??
My office; out. The toilet; out. The work shed; out.
For a moments peace all I have left is the basement.

No doubt Koz, I can always depend on the mancave.

VA south I think is mostly slab. Very strange to see the water heater in a kitchen closet at my friends house... then remembered no basement
