MSP physical fitness test

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I am sure this has been answered before but I could not find information on it. What does the physical fitness test consist of? How much running is done on a typical day in the academy?

Posted by: 5-0

Are you talking about an RTT or SSPO? I know that the SSPO test just consisted of 2 obstacle course runs. It was a mess outside the day we did it, so they might have cancelled the run... Average run (fast group) was 4 'laps' (8:30 pace) with a lap being approx 1.1 miles around Camp New Braintree. Longest run was 5 laps at around a 7:50-8:20 pace. Your mileage may vary.

The PT test for an RTT consists of a 1.5-mile run and 2 obstacle courses

There's nothing "Typical" about a day at the academy. It's not just the running that happens during PT. You run everywhere you go. At least PT is done in sneakers. It's a great way to break in those new boots.

So true, so true!!! Ahhh the memories....

so how much running in the boots occurs on a daily basis? cause that sounds mucho painful

Posted by: tazoez

Every where you have to go, so I would say all day long.

Posted by: JLT770

its hard enough for me to find a decent pair of boots to walk in...let alone run

Find a pair of boots that come with a straw 'cuz you're gonna have to learn to just suck it up!!

Seriously, Magnums are affordable and really almost sneaker comfy. You can find them anywhere.

I agree with the first part of your comment, however at the SPA, you wear the boots you are issued.

It's different during water safety though. They let you get creative. I picked out a bathing suit with summer colors in a low rise mesh.

Sorry, wear the boots you're issued and that's it. Not comfortable? Go home. I'm getting so sick of these questions about boot preference, earring standards and CDL license preference. You join the State Police and you are NOTHING your qualifications are NOTHING and your special talents (and/or ear holes) are NOTHING. You are NOTHING until you are made into a Trooper. Evereyone comes in equally worthless and leaves a Trooper. Nuff said.

thanks for answering my question, i didn't say i was something, but ok great.

C'mere lil buddy I'll give you a hug..

Posted by: JLT770

don't need a hug, just answers, that's why im here asking the questions i do.

Posted by: mechanixman

Is the municipal police academy easier than the state police academy.

Posted by: JLT770

...but ok i don't ask questions like this guy does

Posted by: tazoez

Something that is "EASIER" is NOT worth having or going for. If you want to be a officer/trooper, it should be difficult because the job can be at times (from what I have heard).

Posted by: mechanixman

JLT770, I ask questions for answers, you don't have any answers, I don't need your comments. I not worried about running, its hard for a reason. You sound like you need a wanh-burger or how about some french-crys. Stop quoting Caddy Shack---NOONAN miss it!

Posted by: JLT770

BUT RUNNING IS SO HARD! as for the wah burgers and french crys...ill get nothing and like it. in true masscops tradition my answer for you is to search the threads and posts for your answer, because you are right i cannot answer that question

thanks for the insight. for those that have passed the pt test for the state police and completed the academy, would running at around a 10 minute mile for 4 miles on average be enough to pass the test and do well at the academy?

Posted by: Rock

Hard to say if that would be fast enough or not. The test run is a mile and a half. Last I saw they give you approx 12:30 or 12:45 to run it (assuming your a male). You do the math. If you can't pass that, you shouldn't get on.

Posted by: lawdog671

If you're really doing that Norwich that's a good start...our runs are paced by the Drill/PT staff and if you're doing that with no trouble it's a good start. But you gotta pass the written/oral etc tests ....and theres no class scheduled anyways right now...kinda got the cart in front of the horse...lol....

I would be running at least 8:30-9:00 mile pace. Don't go too crazy rigfht now. I doubt there will be a new test until next year.

Posted by: Norwich

no, you are right. i am kind of getting a little ahead of myself. this is all just in case the stars, sun and moon align in the right way. i appreciate the insight again. at least i know what is expected.

Good to see that you are taking the process seriously. If the day comes, you should be well prepared. There will be others standing on the Rear Company Street who are not. Their stay at New Braintree will be brief and humiliating. Good luck.
