DANVERS - When names started filling up a waiting list, Danvers police figured something needed to be done. To satisfy the evident demand, the department will for the first time hold a fall session of its citizens police academy. The 10-week glimpse at the life of a police officer is usually offered in the spring. "It's a great opportunity for citizens to get a behind-the-scenes look at the police department," Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said. The academy is scheduled to run every Wednesday night at the police station on Ash Street, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., from Oct. 3 to Dec. 5. The academy is free to any citizen who lives or works in Danvers. Twenty slots are available. Each class will cover a different aspect of police work, including patrol, firearms, criminal law, crime scene analysis and use of the K-9 unit. Participants will be able to fire a gun in the department's firing range if they want, and each student rides along with a patrolman, responding to calls, for four hours. Police officers, supervisors and civilians with a particular expertise will instruct on each topic. The ride-along is in addition to the 10 classroom sessions. "You get to see first-hand what happens on the street," Bettencourt said. The purpose of the academy is to give residents an understanding of the strategy behind the department's methods. There is a specific manner in which an officer is trained to approach a stopped motor vehicle, for example. "We tell them how we do certain things and why we do certain things," Bettencourt said. But the academy also provides insight into various ways the police could better serve the public. "We get feedback from people about how we can be doing better," Bettencourt said. The department is continuing its effort to diversify the segments of the population with which it interacts. Police recently held an academy for senior citizens, and Bettencourt said another academy is planned for this spring for Danvers students in middle school and high school. The subject matter is tailored to each group. How to apply If you're interested in applying for the Citizens Police Academy, call Sgt. Robert Bettencourt at 978-774-1213, ext. 134. Applications can be mailed or picked up at the police station. They can also be downloaded from the department's Web site - www.danverspolice.com.
