MIDDLETON - An evening spent racing down the heart-pounding slides of a local indoor water park could help firefighters save victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
The Fire Department, which runs Middleton's ambulance service, is trying to raise $15,000 to buy a Zoll AutoPulse cardiac support pump - a battery-powered device designed to perform chest compressions on someone whose heart has stopped. Firefighters are selling $20 tickets to the CoCo Key Water Resort at the Sheraton Ferncroft Resort, with proceeds going toward the purchase of the 20-pound device, which looks like a body board with a thick band attached. "It's a noninvasive cardiac support pump, which will provide chest compressions for people in cardiac arrest," fire Chief Frank Twiss said. The band straps around a person's chest, and as it tightens, it automatically performs compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Twiss said. "The rescuer can't perform compressions like the machine can," Twiss said. Often, rescuers tire while performing chest compressions, with 30 compressions required for every two breaths. Twiss said the device gives firefighters an extra pair of hands. "It frees up one of us to perform other functions," said Twiss, who showed off the device recently with paramedic Douglas LeColst. The department is carrying a demonstration model on one of its ambulances; it has not been used in an actual rescue. This will be the first fundraiser at the water park dedicated to a Middleton cause, said Elizabeth Beutel, a marketing manager at CoCo Key, which opened in May at the Sheraton Ferncroft. Fundraisers at CoCo Key have raised some serious cash, Beutel said. Last week, families from Peabody and Boxford held a drive to sponsor their participation in the American Heart Association's Heartwalk in Boston, and they raised $3,000, Beutel said.
