SALEM - A 45-year-old local man faces numerous drug charges, the result of a monthlong investigation and detectives' discovery of 18 grams of cocaine and other drugs, according to police.
Kenneth Loftman, of 8 Arbella St., was arrested yesterday after police said they searched his car, a 1997 Plymouth Breeze, and the apartment he shares with his girlfriend.
Police said they also found marijuana and $2,200 in cash. They found drug paraphernalia and "cutting agents" - substances mixed with cocaine to increase its volume - in Loftman's apartment, according to police.
"Most of the stuff was in his car and backpack," said Detective Bill Jennings, the lead investigator on the case.
Jennings said Loftman wasn't home when they first arrived at 11 a.m.
He was arrested about two hours later when he pulled up in his car.
Following a brief struggle, he threw four bags of cocaine into an open window of an unmarked police car, the report said.
Police said the other bags of cocaine were found in the backpack in the trunk of his car and in Loftman's shirt pocket for a total of 18 grams. That amount of cocaine means Loftman will be charged with drug trafficking.
In addition, Loftman is charged with drug possession in a school zone (Carlton Elementary School); possession of cocaine (second offense); cocaine possession with intent to distribute; and marijuana possession.
He was held overnight in a police station holding cell and was to be arraigned in Salem District Court today.
Police said that while they searched Loftman's apartment, a 22-year-old woman, Christina M. Kenney, of 117 Congress St., Apt. 7, walked into the residence and was arrested after police learned there was a warrant for her arrest out of Newburyport District Court.
