Can a local union impose sanctions on their officers?

Our union has a question. Can the local union impose sanctions on officers who go against a local's vote on a particular issue? The question has not yet been answered by the National Representative.

our union (MCOFU) kicked 140 officers out of the union for working the DNC after they were told not to by the union.

the officers did get letters from the commissioner telling them to report to the convention , but our union executive board threw them out anyways.

don't know if that helps , just some madness from our corner of the world

How does that work? If you have to join the union to be in the "shop" what happens when you are kicked out? You obviously don't loose your job. Does the union just not represent you?

for those individuals that's pretty much the case. there's allot of bad blood between the two sides and it doesn't appear to be any resolution anytime soon ( we voted the same eboard back in )

instead of going after the department our union choose to go after it's members , a bad idea.

You can sanction union members, provided it's allowed by your constitution and by-laws. IMO, that route should only be taken under the most dire circumstances imaginable.

For those that knowingly and willingly violate the contract there should be some sort of sanctions, i.e. violators are taken off the detail/OT list, etc. I see more grievances of officer vs. officer than officer vs. management. A complete waste of money.

that's true. in our case officers were told not to cross BPD picket lines. Boston resolved their contract dispute with the city and had no problem with the DOC being there. our union didn't see it that way and kicked those members out.


I see more grievances of officer vs. officer than officer vs. management. A complete waste of money.

see that allot too. usually seniority based stuff. job bids , vacations , etc

Reply:
A Union member can not take an officer off of the OT or the detail list for union functions. This would be handled by Admin only.

I think our situation is a little different/unique because the OT and detail board is governed by the union contract.
