(WBZ) MATTAPOISETT Massachusetts State Police are urging people in the Mattapoisett area to remain indoors as they search for a fugitive who's considered armed and dangerous.

Troopers are searching for 46-year-old Charles Chaples in a wooded area adjacent to 11 Industrial Drive.

They attempted to serve a parole violation warrant to Chaples at Lesco Distributing around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday when he fled into a wooded area. Police say there are reports that indicate Chapels stated he would not go back to jail.

Chaples is described as a white male, 6'2" tall, approximately 225-230 pounds with balding gray hair. Police say he was last seen wearing green shorts, a green tank top and carrying a gray sweatshirt. He has three unknown tattoos on his back and his last known address is Hicksville Road in Dartmouth.

State police would not say what kind of crime Chaples committed; they would just say it was a violent crime.

Authorities are conducting reverse 911 calls in the Plymouth County area to alert residents about Chaples.

Police searching for violent criminal, issue warning to Mattapoisett parents

MATTAPOISETT — State police at this hour are searching for Charles M. Chaples, a parole violator, who fled shortly before 10 a.m. when troopers attempted to arrest him on Industrial Drive.
A manhunt is underway here and in neighboring Marion. Mattapoisett police issued a reverse 911 call advisory to parents to be at home today when their children return from school.
State police have gone door to door in the vicinity of North Street warning residents to lock their doors and windows. He is still believed to be in the area, police said.
Mr. Chaples of 163 Harwich St., New Bedford, is described by police as 46 years old, white, with balding gray hair, weighing about 225 to 230 pounds. He was last seen wearing a green tank top and green shorts, work boots and carrying a gray sweater. He has three tattoos on his back, police said.
Mr. Chaples is was paroled after serving 24 years of a life sentence for a 1982 murder, state police said.
State police Sgt. Barry Domingos said Mr. Chaples violated his parole when a 209A complaint for domestic abuse was taken out against him. There are no details about the 209A.
“Reports indicate that Mr. Chaples has stated he will not go back to jail,” state police said.
In March 1983, then 22-year-old Mr. Chaples pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of a night watchman at Lincoln Park in Dartmouth.
Mr. Chaples admitted shooting Raymond C. Santos, a 48-year-old New Bedford man, as Mr. Santos was making his rounds at the then-amusement park on March 6, 1982.
The district attorney’s office said that earlier that evening, Mr. Chaples had stolen a 12-gauge shotgun, shells and work gloves from a Lakewood Road home in Dartmouth.
The DA’s office said the apparent motive at Lincoln Park was robbery. When Mr. Santos refused to hand over the keys to the park safe, as Mr. Chaples had demanded, he then threw a knife at Mr. Chaples who responded by firing the shotgun.
Mr. Santos died of gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen, the district attorney’s office said.
At the time of the murder, Mr. Chaples listed his home address as 4 Bowman Road in Mattapoisett, the residence of his father and stepmother, although several people who knew him said he was drifter who floated from place to place.
Today Mr. Chaples is working as a delivery driver. The State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Squad knew his route and waited for him on Industrial Drive.
He allegedly fled minutes before troopers attempted to arrest him, said Sgt. Domingos, of the Tactical Operations Unit. Mr. Chaples was last seen running into woods behind Lesco Distribution, 11 Industrial Drive.
Mr. Chaples was tipped off police were looking for him and bolted, Sgt. Domingos said.
State police search dogs and a squad of troopers are searching the Industrial Drive area behind Lesco Distributing Co., near Interstate 195 East and North Street. A state police helicopter is hovering in the neighborhood to aid in the search.
Maj. Gerard Colletta told reporters shortly before 1:30 p.m. that police are sufficiently alarmed they are issuing a reverse 911 call advisory to the town’s residents, advising that schoolchildren not return to empty homes this afternoon.
“We have established a perimeter and officers in marked and unmarked cars (have saturated) the area of Mattapoisett and Marion,” Maj. Colletta said.
A roadblock was set up on North Street, where police are stopping every vehicle leaving Mattapoisett.

(WBZ) MATTAPOISETT State Police say a convicted killer wanted for violating parole has been captured.

Troopers had been searching in and around Mattapoisett for Charles Chaples, 46, since Thursday morning. They have not released any details of how he was taken into custody.

He was paroled last year after serving 24 years in prison for the 1982 shooting death of a night watchman at an amusement park in Dartmouth.

State police said Chaples, who works as a truck driver, was making a delivery to the Mattapoissett Business Park Thursday when officers attempted to serve a warrant for the parole violation that stemmed from an alleged domestic incident in New Bedford.

Police say Chaples ran off into nearby woods, prompting a massive search involving canine units and a helicopter.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Department used a reverse 911 system to inform Mattapoisett residents about the fugitive search.

School officials canceled outdoor recess and informed parents that children would not be dropped off at bus stops unless parents were there to greet them.
