Threat Made As University Prepares To Host Debate

Video: Nothing Found In Search

DURHAM, N.H. -- A bomb threat was e-mailed to the University of New Hampshire over the weekend, and police said it was similar to threats made at a dozen universities across the country.

University officials said the threat was e-mailed to two professors at Morse Hall on Sunday night. The timing of the threat caused increased concern because of a Republican presidential debate being held at UNH on Wednesday.

"UNH police worked very closely with state police to bring in the bomb-sniffing dogs and completely search the interior and exterior of the building," UNH spokeswoman Kim Billings said.

Nothing was found during the search. Police said the threat was similar to another threat made at UNH last week that also turned out to be a hoax.

At least 12 universities across the country, including the University of Alaska-Anchorage, Clemson University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have received similar threats, police said.

"Based on the information we are receiving, it appears there may be a nexus to all of these that are happening around the country," UNH Police Deputy Chief Paul Dean said. "We are also understanding that bomb threats are going to private companies, as well."

UNH students received word of the threat through e-mails, part of a new security system put in place on the campus this year.

Officials said that security had already been ramped up because of Wednesday's presidential debate. Dean said that the university would be able to handle it if more threats come in.

State and local police, along with the FBI and UNH's cyber crimes unit are assisting in the investigation.
