STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. -- The body of a missing nursing student from Maine has been found in a shallow grave in Stewartstown, officials said.
Investigators said the body of Kelly Gorham, 30, of Alfred, Maine, was found on a property in Stewartstown after a search on Saturday and Sunday. Officials said she appeared to be the victim of a homicide.
Private investigator Sid Carlson said the property is owned by his client, Brian Twardus, the father of Gorham's former fiance, Jason Twardus, of Rochester, N.H. Carlson said that Jason Twardus has been interviewed several times by state police.
According to Carlson, Jason Twardus broke up with Gorham in June after they had been dating for two years. Carlson said that the former fiance denied any involvement in Gorham's death.
"I asked him an hour ago if he killed Kelly. I asked point blank, 'Did you kill her? Did you have anything to do with it?'" Carlson said. "And he claimed, 'No.' I said, 'Jason, it's an awful coincidence that Kelly is missing. You were engaged to be married to her. You've lived with her for two years, and now, her body shows up on your father's property up by the Canadian border.'"
Police have not named any suspect in Gorham's disappearance and death.
Gorham was last seen on Aug. 7. A co-worker told police that she didn't show up for a scheduled shift the next day. The case was investigated by Maine State Police, and New Hampshire authorities later became involved.
An autopsy was conducted, but the exact cause and manner of Gorham's death were not released.
Anyone with information on the case was asked to call New Hampshire State Police at 603-271-3636 or Maine State Police at 207-657-3030.
