For two Northeastern freshman, school year begins and ends with arrest

By Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

A pair of freshmen at Northeastern University learned a tough lesson before classes even started this semester, when one of them allegedly leaned out the window of his dormitory and yelled something regrettable in earshot of plainclothes police officers.

"If you're looking for weed, my roommate Ferrante has some for sale," Michael R. Emery yelled, according to a release issued today by the Suffolk district attorney's office.

The sales pitch, made Sunday to a fellow student out a second-floor window at the Henenway Street residence hall, got Emery, 18, and his roommate, Matthew J. Ferrante, 18, in a lot of trouble. After their room was searched and officers found a bevy of marijuana, smoking accessories and liquor, the pair was arrested, arraigned, and apparently thrown out of school.

"I can tell you that they are no longer students here at Northeastern," said Laura Shea, a school spokeswoman, who declined to comment further.

According to the release from prosecutors, police went to the second floor of the dormitory after hearing Emery yell and found the door open. In plain view was a bottle of Grey Goose vodka, a shot glass, and a plastic baggie of marijuana. The officers knocked and identified themselves to Emery, of Haverhill, and Ferrante, of North Andover.

As they spoke to the teens, police spotted another bag of marijuana and a glass pipe. The officers read the students their rights and received permission to search the room, according to the release. The search yielded eight small bags of marijuana, a larger bag containing three to four ounces of marijuana, hundreds of clear plastic baggies, and a Triton T2 digital scale. The officers also found a grinder, a bong, $1,045 in cash, bottles of Malibu rum, Smirnoff Twist raspberry vodka, and Southern Comfort, and a vaporizer, a device that uses heat to release marijuana's intoxicating chemicals but does not burn the plant.

Outside the window of their room, the students had rigged a pulley system that had been designed to raise and lower items from the room directly overhead. It was not immediately how the students were using the pulley system, prosecutors said.

Emery and Ferrant were arraigned Tuesday in Roxbury District Court and charged with possession of a class D substance with intent to distribute in a school zone, possession of alcohol by a minor, and conspiracy to violate the state's drug laws. The teens were released without bail.

At least they appear to have been kicked out of college. I recently spoke to a campus cop who made two arrests during orietation. Both arrestees were parents...one drinking in public....open container on the campus and the second for actually standing outside sucking weed. Those parents were quick to yell about their rights and they were glad their kids attend a public university (UNH) where a part of their required student fees actually pays for legal defense for any students busted on campus. Cops there, unlike anywhere else in NH I know, must actually save alcoholic beverage as evidence for testing in every arrest as a result of hoops they make police jump through for a student conviction.

I'll bet mom & dad are just thrilled about this.

yeah, its pretty unbelievable but an option for community service for the UMass Police Dept. was to open all the beer containers seized as evidence and pour it down a sewer drain.

Mom and dad have probably already hired lawyers to sue for readmission...
If they have clean records what chance is there that they will do any time at all, slim and none.

Michael Emery and Matthew Ferrante pleaded not guilty to drug charges in an apparent drug den bust at a Northeastern University dorm.

Northeastern Freshmen Arrested In Dorm Drug Bust

(WBZ) BOSTON Announcing the sale of pot out a dorm room window probably isn't a good idea when two police officers are nearby.

A pair of former Northeastern University freshmen are facing drug and other charges after one of them leaned out his dorm window Sunday and loudly told a woman in the dorm opposite his that he and his roommate were selling pot.

By coincidence, two plain clothes Boston officers in the building overheard the conversation.

The charges allege that 18-year-old Michael Emery, of Haverhill, yelled to a young woman in a dorm across the way from his, "If you're looking for weed, my roommate Ferrante has some for sale."

Police said Emery rigged a pulley system that would bring a pair of empty plastic bottles up and down between his dorm and the one directly above it.

The officers made their way up to a second floor room in a Hemenway Street dorm where they arrested Emery and 19-year-old Matthew Ferrante, of North Andover.

Police allegedly found about four ounces of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and several bottles of alcohol in the room. Police said the dorm door was wide open when they arrived and could see a bottle of Gray Goose vodka in plain view next to a shot glass as well as a plastic baggie with marijuana.

Both pleaded not guilty Wednesday at their arraignment and were released on personal recognizance.

They were each charged with possession of a class D substance with intent to distribute in a school zone, possession of alcohol by a minor, and conspiracy to violate the state's drug laws.

A university spokeswoman said the two "are no longer students."

Emery and Ferrante are scheduled to be back in court on Oct. 24.

If my kid pulled something like that, the locks would be changed and all his shit would be on the front lawn. He can go be a full-time drug dealer.

A Northeastern University freshman from North Andover was arrested and thrown out of school after his roommate leaned out their dorm room window and announced they had marijuana for sale, police said.
Matthew Ferrante, 18, was arrested along with his roommate Michael Emery, 18, of Haverhill. Emery leaned out their window and loudly told a woman in the dorm opposite theirs that Ferrante had the drugs for sale, police said.
Two plainclothes Boston police officers in the building overheard the conversation and made their way up to a second-floor dorm room where they arrested the two men. The officers found about 4 ounces of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, including a scale, and several bottles of alcohol in the room, the Suffolk County district attorney's office said.
"If you're looking for weed, my roommate Ferrante has some for sale," Emery said out the window, according to the district attorney's office, which released information about the incident that happened Sunday.
The students were arraigned in Roxbury District Court on Tuesday on charges of possession of a class D substance with intent to distribute in a school zone, possession of alcohol by a minor, and conspiracy to violate the state's drug laws. The intent to distribute charge carries a maximum of two years in jail.
They pleaded not guilty and were released on personal recognizance. They are due back in court on Oct. 24.
"They are no longer students here," said Laura Shea, spokeswoman for Northeastern University.
