I see it says that "two years experience in law enforcement desired". Is this one of those cases where it's code for "required"? Anyone know if they have any intentions of sending folks to the academy?

I've got a lot of campus experience, but it's security. Reckon all it'll cost me to apply is the resume paper, so why not? But if anyone works there or knows of their hiring tendencies, I'd appreciate it.

My sister used to be a college admin there back in the day, and had lots of good to say about tyhe folks there, so I'm interested.

Thanks!

They're looking to fill the spot ASAP so they'll probably want someone academy, and preferably firearms trained. It's also because the next academy is this fall/winter out in Boston with limited on-site residency... which means a boatload of commuter time or a hefty 3-4 month hotel bill. They're also trying to put on two more in as many years to establish a minimum of 4 armed officers per shift.

The inside poop is that the 4-year degree requirement will be waived for the right applicant, which opens up the hiring pool quite a bit. So anyone who has a 2-year degree or equivalent credits should apply. It' will also mean that you can finish your CJ degree for free... or get your masters or law degree.

OK, thanks for the heads-up. Figure I'll still put in for it; hey, who knows? Maybe they'll be wowed by my charm. :P

After all, the more lines I cast out, the better the chances of an eventual bite, eh?

Thanks again for the info!

What academy out of Boston could they possibly send you to. The SSPO is in New Braintree.

If you don't apply for a position, then your chances of getting the job are exactly 0%.

No one should ever ask, "Should I apply for this job?" Hell, if it turns out you don't really want that job, turn THEM down, but no one ever gets any kind of shot if they don't throw in an application or resume. Apply EVERYWHERE!

There's that old saying, "kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out."
How's this, "Apply to 'em all, then sort 'em out later."

BC is hiring 10 officers and they need them trained ASAP so they offered to host an SSPO academy in November. Originally, it was supposed to be on their campus but after some logistical problems, they're holding SSPO #19 in Tyngsboro where BC has a satelite campus.

Out here in the western part of the state, everything east of the Quabbin is considered Boston... just like Boston considers us part of NY

I've never considered Western Mass. part of NY. NY doesn't deserve that wonderful heavenly place. It seems like the most squared away part of the whole Commonwealth (except Northampton-Cambridge/Brookline wannabe!) and if I didn't like my home town so much, I'd have moved out there YEARS ago.

New York can have Connecticut.

That would be a Gawdawful commute for anyone taking the WNEC job. TYNGSBOROUGH? Ugh.

That's why WNEC is looking for someone already academy trained.

Have any other SSPO Academies ever been held out of MSP New Braintree?
Will this class include firearms training/certification due to BC being armed?

Posted by: Macop

SGT128-13 do you mean Boston College, if so I have known them to go to the MPOC, has that changed?

This is the first one outside of New Braintree in many years. The first few SSPO classes (CPOC's back then) were scattered about. I think one was at Babson and I can't remember where the others were.

There was scuttlebutt about a two week firearms course for those departments that are armed. I'm not sure the logistics were ever worked out though.

Not sure if it was BC or BU... but it was because of a mass hiring at one of those places: http://www.masscops.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36059

FWIW... I've heard that they're going to be very very flexible on this requirement and would like applicants to have about 2 years of post-secondary education.

Does anyone know what the starting pay for WNEC is?
How far will the intermittent academy get you?

Last I heard, it was $33-$34K a year, good benny's, full tuition, plenty of OT and training, ... and of course, guns!

Not far. They were looking for someone SSPO trained with "some" college education. With BU usurping the 19th SSPO, and with no plans for another SSPO academy in 2008, SSPO will probably help get you in the door. From what I hear, not too many applications which I find hard to believe.
