State police protection up for discussion

THOMPSON – Voters at a special town meeting tomorrow will be able to discuss the resident state trooper program. The issue goes to a referendum on Sept. 18.

The program was cut in the annual budget.

However selectmen felt there was enough concern among residents to schedule the referendum.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be at 8 p.m. in the community center at the public library, Route 12.

The referendum, scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 18, seeks about $85,000 to fund the program through the rest of the fiscal year.

Voters at an Aug. 9 referendum approved a town government budget of $5.8 million and a school budget of $15.3 million. In the process, $101,000 for the trooper program was cut.

The program provides dedicated police protection to the town, in addition to coverage from State Police Troop D barracks in Danielson.

The program was to have lost funding Aug. 31.

However, the Finance Committee approved about $4,000 to continue the program through Sept. 30.

Selectman Kathleen A. Hiatt yesterday said that selectmen have received a petition supporting the program, signed by 200 people.

“Selectmen felt strongly that in some town meetings there was a lot of discussion about the resident state trooper, for and against, but based on the (budget) referendum ballot, there was no way to interpret whether the budget vote was for or against the trooper program,” she said.

While some residents favored dropping the program, she said, others voted against the budget, hoping the trooper program would then be reinstated
