WHITMAN— Three police sergeants vying to become the town's first permanent police chief in more than 27 months will soon get to tell selectmen why each is the best candidate for the position.
Selectmen will interview the top three scorers on a departmental promotional examination in open session at that board's Oct. 2 meeting.
Sgt. Christine May ranked first on a May 12 civil service examination, followed by Detective Sgt. Timothy Hanlon and Sgt. Harry Bates. The other two candidates, provisional Police Chief Edward Slocum and Sgt. Scott Benton, did not rank in the top three and were not included in the list.
Whitman got a certified list from the Human Resources Division on Tuesday afternoon, and May and Hanlon had signed off on it expressing interest in the appointment as of Tuesday night, said Town Administrator Frank Lynam.
Whitman has been without a permanent police chief since May 2005, after former Police Chief John Schnyer officially retired.
Selectmen appointed Slocum provisionally a year ago to replace former provisional Police Chief Raymond Nelson, who faced mandatory retirement on Aug. 31, 2006, when he turned age 65.
May became the department's first female police sergeant at age 26 in May 2003, when she outscored the 10 other candidates in October 2002 in a departmental promotional examination.
Hanlon, 40, became an officer in 2000, a detective in 2003 and a sergeant in 2005.
Bates, 56, has been the department's safety officer for more than 20 years. He became a permanent officer in 1975 and a sergeant in 1986.
