WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Police in West Springfield are investigating a possible hate crime after more than two dozen gravestones were toppled at Jewish cemeteries.
Officials say the vandalism occurred Monday night at the cemeteries on King's Highway, which serve four local Jewish congregations. Gravestones at an adjacent Roman Catholic cemetery were left untouched.
Investigators found no anti-Semitic graffiti at the site.
No arrests have been made, but if the desecration is determined to be a hate crime the penalties would be harsher for anyone who is caught.
The vandalism occurred about ten days before the start of the Jewish high holy days.
