DOC Academy starting 9-10-07 Who's In?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

I get to head up to Shirley with 3 of my buddies to start the DOC academy on Monday. This should be an interesting change of pace for the next 10 weeks. My buddies and I are expecting the worst. If it's bad, we won't be disappointed. If it's less than we expect, we'll take it as a blessing... But we're certainly not counting on an easy time.

Anyone else heading up to Shirley for a little vacation?

Where and what kind of water bottles are we supposed to purchase? At the CPO screening, I don't remember anything about the "discussed" kind of bottle. I called the Academy, but have yet to hear back.

At the CO interviews the Sgt. showed us a Propel bottle w/o the label. That's what I'm going to bring. Good luck and I'll see ya bright n early on Monday.

I am just posting to intoduce my self, I too am attending the academy starting the tenth of september. If any one has any suggestions, advise etc... please fill me in. This is my first law enorcement job, I hope to make the best of it and hope that we can all successfully complete the recruit training. See ya Monday.

Well, I hope you have your boots polished and all your required stuff together. Remember your notebook, pens, water bottle, and pocket notebook (no wirebound). I'm packing my shower stuff, running shoes, etc. just in case but i think tomorrow's going to be a lot of paperwork and being yelled at.
Just keep focused straight ahead, "sir, yes, sir", "sir, no, sir", and grin and bear it. It's not going to be easy but no one promised it would be. The idea of it all is to work as a team to get through everything. We'll do fine.
Good luck, Bob and I'll see you bright n' early tomorrow up in Shirley.

good luck guys!

Alpha or Bravo? I am in Bravo Bravo.

Posted by: NytroCop

Alpha Charlie. You have fun with those night classes. 1300-2100 is going to stink royally. a couple of my buddies are on Bravo team with you. First day was definitely all that I expected and more... but hey, that's what we're here for, right?
Anyways, off to spit shine my boots, get my shoelace(s), and get ready for tomorrow's fun and excitment. Good luck and stay strong.

well gentlemen, how was day 2??

Posted by: Delta784

I certainly don't miss those days.

I Would Like To Know How Sgt. Thomas Is Treating Everyone!! Remember To Hug That Wall While Walking Down The Hallway!!

Posted by: Vindicated

No suprises here. The Academy is short thank goodness. Wife is helping me out quite a bit, I miss my kids more, and when things get retarded, I just think of them.

I think two people quit so far, and the rest I'll keep to my self. As I'm sure there are some instructor lurkers here.

BobNorthShore, what part(roughly), as no one is near where I come from unfortunately...

Whatever you do, remember to use Kiwi only on those boots. Leather luster is a big NONO. If you use anything other than Kiwi polish you will be embarrassed by the DI's. Trust ME!!!

Week one down...went on tours today, what a depressing place to go to work. Even the CO's were all talking about how much time they have left. The DI's talk about "the money", which imo, isn't that much even with OT. If I were a CO, in the academy, had other options, I'd walk...

That job is just way too depressing to think about for ANY amount of time. They are not kidding, you definitely have to be a special person to do that job. I am not that person lol, I'm looking at another 10 years of marriage, I don't think that environment is conducive to that.

Out of all law enforcement that I have seen, the CO has to be the most dreary, drudgery filled job in LE I have ever seen, props to the ones that do it.

Just remember it's what you make of it. Take your time and remember if you you don't hold those ass clowns accountable, no-one will. Not to sound foolish - As a new CO - but try not to be too scared, hold your head up and do your job as you're trained. The cons will accept and respect that - no matter what you may think or how they react. If the cons know you come in to work every day and do your job they will challenge you. Don't act like a tough guy and you don't need to deliberately F' with them - just hold them accountable and you may occasionally find your new job to be sporadically rewarding. If you come into the business resisting it, you'll get walked on and you won't last very long. To some degree the job may "suck"... You gotta "embrace the suck" to be successful. My 2 cents from 10 years in corrections.

So how long till you bail?

Posted by: Vindicated

HaHa, no bailing here lol. Not a CO, and the academy is cake. Was pointing out my personal observations from talking/listening to the CO's, as well as environmental observations. Like I said, props to those CO's, just not where I would take my career...

You gotta "embrace the suck" to be successful

that's a beautiful line and very true.

well, any word on how things are going? or did they already give you the code of silence

Posted by: NytroCop

We haven't received any code of silence on Alpha team. I'm doing well. Two weeks into the academy and i've lost 7.5 pounds already so i'm like that downward trend. The academics aren't anything to really worry about. I believe we're down to about 70 right now (from 76-75 around there). Not sure how Bravo team's doing.
Just opened the Mock Institute today so we're still getting our feet under ourselves in respect to that. All in all things are going good. Just staying strong, going hard, and doing whatever it takes to get by.
