Is it me or are more towns and cities around Boston changing to the black and white color scheme cruisers? I noticed when Belmont went to it, now it seems Cambridge is going to the black and white scheme as well.

a lot of the towns on the lower part of the cape have gone back to the black and white... Chatham, harwich, orleans, and brewster are all very simmilar now.

out west too. Springfield comes to mind. Holyoke and West Springfield already had black and whites.

From a recent editon of OFFICER.COM

Aug. 20--Dave Robbins knew one big change he wanted to make when he became the police chief in Hudson a few years ago -- Bring back the black and white police cruiser.
At the time, the city fleet was composed of silver cars. Robbins called them downright ugly, and some folks in town referred to them as the "Gray Ghosts."
"The black and whites look cleaner and crisper and are a little more professional," said Robbins, who admits his respect for the traditional black and white stems from watching the television show Adam-12. "I think we're taken a little more seriously."
The iconic two-toned cruiser, which disappeared in many communities years ago in favor of solid whites, blues and silvers, is making a strong comeback throughout North America. Police departments from the small village of Lakemore, which has three vehicles, to the giant Ontario Provincial Police, which has a fleet of 1,200, are opting to return to the black and white cars, concluding that they are more identifiable as law-enforcement vehicles and convey a sense of authority.
Ford Motor Co., the maker of the popular Crown Victoria, saw a 7 percent increase in orders for black and white cars from the 2006 to 2007 models. Black and whites now make up 22 percent of police vehicles ordered from Ford.
"I don't care what they say, there's nothing more stark in contrast than black and white," said Ed Nowicki, executive director of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association in Twin Lakes, Wis. "You see that black and white car, you know it's the police."

thats true, but still i thought cambridge's color scheme was...original. almost like a NYPD cruiser going to black and white...it just doesn't seem right

I've noticed the same trend for the last couple of years now. I think its a backlash against the "community policing" mentality so prevalent in the 90's. Police departments in the 90's wanted their cruisers to appear more "friendly", hence went with all-white cruisers with very bright primary color schemes. I think the recent shift in colors attests to police departments more interested in stopping crime then appearing like "officer friendly" to the public. I believe it makes cruisers appear more "aggressive" and professional, and applaud the change.

Quincy, Mass went to black & white cars. they do look better than the older cars.

although some managers use paint jobs and new uniforms like so much window dressing and don't address the real problems inside the department.

Lexington, Mass still has the best cruiser design....all black.

i thought you guys were blue and yellow?

+1.

One of the only positive things our chief has done was going to black & white cruisers. Our old graphics design made us look like taxi cabs.

Danvers PD went back to black and white after the Chief asked officers what they thought. But I've heard (don't know if it is true) that the change actually had to do with being a member of NEMLEC.

Side note, we had a Capt. telling officers we were switching to lime green (remember some of the old fire apparatus?) as they were more visible and prevented accidents. That had some guys all pissed off and the Capt. was just busting em.

Cambridge already has the Black/White Cruisers, They got 7 seven of them several weeks ago. They look Sharp!

It's true, NEMLEC wanted everyone to be black and white for uniformity.

Clearly the black & white scheme is simply more identifiable as a Police car. There's less confusion, i.e. is that a taxi? the T Ride? Marty's Courier service? grampy?... Nope, it's the PO-LEESE!

They wanted something different I guess, Maybe more reliable. They don't look that bad

Posted by: Inspector

I thought those black and white cars were Romney's Security units!

Posted by: 94c

Until they invent Black and White Duct tape, we are pretty much stuck with our color scheme.

Even the family truckster that some NEMLECers go bombing to calls in?

heard they got beemers , but it didn't register until driving by the station one day. maybe they grow on you after awhile.

still weird seeing cops on anything but Harleys.

if you want to see a "no frills" paint job check out the Utah State Police.

looks like they put a beehive sticker on the door, stick on some letters to spell state police for the fender and drove it off the lot
