A state trooper is seriously injured when a man

Slideshow: Car Crashes Into Trooper's Cruiser

(WBZ) BOSTON A state trooper and a 26-year-old man suffered serious injuries early Saturday when the man crashed his car into the police vehicle while the trooper was investigating a previous crash on Route 24 in Stoughton.

The crash happened around 2:33 a.m. while the trooper was investigating the scene of an earlier crash on the side of the road on Route 24 South just before Route 139. State police said the trooper was inside his cruiser preparing paperwork related to the crash when a 2005 Acura TL sedan veered into the breakdown lane of Route 24 and crashed into the back of the trooper's car.

Both the trooper and the man were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, police said. The trooper was taken to Boston Medical Center while the man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. Their names have not been identified.

State police are investigating the crash.

Trooper Injured While Investigating Highway Accident

Accident Forced Temporary Closure Of Route 24 South

BOSTON -- A state trooper and a 26-year-old man were seriously injured when the man's car slammed into a parked state police cruiser in the breakdown lane of Route 24 South in Stoughton early Saturday morning.

According to police, trooper Mark Lombardi, a 14-year-veteran, was sitting in his parked cruiser, filling out paperwork in connection with a previous accident, when a 2005 Acura TL rear-ended his cruiser.

Trooper Lombardi, who suffered serious injuries, was transported to Boston Medical Center.
He was listed in stable condition early Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the Acura, 26-year-old Gregory Puopolo, who also suffered serious injuries, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

The accident, which happened around 2:30 a.m., forced police to close a section of Route 24 South for more than three hours.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation.

On rare occasions, I've been dispatched onto the highway to either cover a crash for the state police or back-up a trooper, and the speed & carelessness of people AFTER they see the blue lights has always amazed me and scared me a little bit.

Best wishes to Trooper Lombardi for a speedy & full recovery. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought of Ellen Engelhardt when I saw the pictures of the crushed cruiser.

Rt 24 is called "highway to hell" average speed 80 to 90 mph especially between 93 and 495
