Lake Champlain Border Patrol By Sheriffs' Boats

Three boats used by the sheriff's department are moored only a few minutes away from the international line separating the United States and Canada ... only here there are no visible signs of it.
One small floating sign does give advice to boaters on border crossing rules, but at night or in fog, it could be easily missed. The U.S. Border Patrol and the Clinton County Sheriff's Department have patrols that can stop boats that have not registered with Customs before entering this country.
The sheriff's patrol also helps to keep boating on the lake safer. "To provide safety inspections for people to understand the navigational laws, for families, guests they have on their vessel to make certain they have the proper safety equipment," said Sheriff David Favro.
In the last three years, the patrol did nearly 5,000 boat inspections and issued over 300 tickets for not complying with navigational laws - only 11 of them were boating while intoxicated.
The patrol often boards a boat and inspects it for safety compliance. "What this shows is that we stopped the vessel and did a safety inspection on it and it complied with the New York State inspection law. It did not have a New York sticker on it. We began a stop on it and did a safety inspection. He did have all the equipment on board and is very well equipped," said Deputy Mike Reid, one of those involved in the patrol.
"The main goal is to enforce the navigation laws of New York, conduct safety inspections, to make sure boaters are complying with the permit they have to have when on the lake," said Lt. Barton Vanleuvan, who also is a member of the Boat Patrol.
When the Canadian dollar went down recently and gas prices went up, boat traffic from Canada dropped. But the Canadian dollar has gone up again and gas prices are better, bringing traffic back to the lake. That means that more surveillance is required. The patrol will be on the lake until October.
Even when the lake is rough and most boats are off the lake, the patrol remains on duty in the event there is an accident they can lend a hand.
