England today was struck by a wildcat strike when prison worked across the nation suddenly walked off the job today. The Prison Officers Association said 20,000 of its members took part in the walkout from 7am which took the Government and prison authorities completely by surprise. The Ministry of Justice obtained an injunction in the High Court against the POA earlier which it expected would lead to a return to work. But most prison officers remained on strike for several hours after the court move and looked set to continue taking action until 7am on Thursday. Now the union's executive has decided to end the stoppage and said fresh talks will be held on Friday. Earlier, a group of prisoners scaled the roof of Liverpool Prison after 200 prison officers were seen outside the main gates of the jail in Walton, Liverpool. The prison officers had been taking part in the nationwide strike, but some went into the prison to help bring the situation back under control. The inmates remained on the roof for around an hour before they were returned into the building. Elsewhere, at Acklington prison in Northumberland, 39-year-old inmate William Stuart Laidlaw was found dead. Staff do not believe his death was linked to the strike. Prison officers also temporarily broke their strike to help deal with a fire at HMP Birmingham to help evacuate prisoners. Four fire engines were sent but the small fire had already been extinguished when they arrived, West Midlands Fire Service said.
