Man allegedly attacked jail guards

Suspect awaits trial on arson, larceny charges

By Gary V. Murray TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER— A Milford man awaiting trial on arson, breaking and entering and larceny charges was arraigned yesterday on new charges of assaulting two correction officers at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction and breaking the nose of a court officer at Clinton District Court.

William Paicopoulos, 26, of 118 Congress St., Milford, pleaded not guilty in Worcester Superior Court to charges of assault and battery on a public employee, two counts of assault and battery on a correction officer, assault on a correction officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot), assault with a dangerous weapon (shank), threatening to commit a crime, and vandalism.

Judge Kathe M. Tuttman set bail at $20,000 cash, as requested by Assistant District Attorney Richard L. Greco, and continued Mr. Paicopoulos’ case to Nov. 1.

Mr. Paicopoulos was indicted in August 2005 on charges of arson of a dwelling, larceny in a building and two counts of breaking and entering. The charges related to a March 4, 2005, fire that destroyed a house at 4 Ben’s Way in Hopedale; a break-in in Hopedale on the same date; and the May 12, 2005, break-in in Upton and larceny of cigarettes in Upton. Mr. Paicopoulos was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail after pleading not guilty to those charges at his Sept. 30 arraignment in Worcester Superior Court. He has remained in custody in lieu of bail since then, according to court records.

On April 17 of this year, while an inmate at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction in West Boylston, Mr. Paicopoulos kicked a correction officer, identified in court records as James McKenna, in the face, Mr. Greco told Judge Tuttman yesterday. The prosecutor said Mr. Paicopoulos was also alleged to have assaulted a correction officer with a “shank,” or handmade weapon, on another occasion. The assault with a dangerous weapon indictment against Mr. Paicopoulos lists the date of that alleged assault as June 21 and the alleged victim as Eric Locke.

In support of his request for bail, Mr. Greco said Mr. Paicopoulos, while in detention at Clinton District Court on July 9, punched a court officer in the face, breaking his nose. The court officer is identified in the corresponding indictment as Jack Foley.

The indictments that gave rise to yesterday’s arraignment were handed up Aug. 20 by a Worcester County grand jury.

Mr. Paicopoulos took issue with Mr. Greco’s account of the alleged courthouse assault yesterday, telling Judge Tuttman he was assaulted by the officer.

Lawyer Michael G. Cashman, who was appointed to represent Mr. Paicopoulos on the new charges, asked that nominal bail be set.

Judge Tuttman set the additional $20,000 cash bail without prejudice, which will allow Mr. Cashman to seek a bail reduction at a future hearing.

The 2005 charges against Mr. Paicopoulos were continued to Nov. 14 for a hearing on pretrial motions that have not yet been filed by his appointed lawyer in that case, Joseph M. Shields

More often than not across the Country these types of assaults go unpunished. These shitbags should be charged no matter how small the damage is to the officer. They should also be charged with assault whenever bodily fluids or feces are thrown at an officer. This is a big issue that every correctional officer should get behind.

This is a first, I agree with Irish. However, you probably shouldn't have used "behind" in the same post as "feces". Just a thought.
