Police investigate report of attempted abduction

By Bradford L. Miner TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WARREN—'Police are looking for four men in a dark blue minivan identified by a 9-year-old boy and his 12-year-old brother in an alleged abduction attempt shortly before 6 p.m. yesterday in the Warren Highway Department yard behind the West Warren Fire Station.

Sgt. Joseph LaFlower, interim head of the police department, said today that officers were called within minutes of the alleged attempt to 2257 Main St. in West Warren.

Police were told by the unidentified nine-year-old that he had been riding his bicycle in the highway department yard between the West Warren Fire Station and CSX railroad tracks when he was approached by two men who were in a dark blue van, possibly a late model Dodge Caravan. The driver and a second man got out of the van and approached him.

Sgt. LaFlower said the boy told police the two men attempted to put a blindfold on him.

He said the boy told police he kicked and screamed and in the process, was able to remove the blindfold. Hearing the commotion, his older brother ran to his aid and the two men jumped back in the van and took off, the youngster told police.

The boy described the driver as a bald man with a fringe of brown hair who had a tattoo on his arm of a skull with red eyes.

The sergeant said the boy told police that the second man had a pink beard.

He said the boy described a third man in the van as “dressed like a cowboy,” with wearing a cowboy hat, red shirt, blue jeans with a coil of rope over his shoulder.

Sgt. LaFlower said the boy’s older brother told police that he heard his brother’s screams and ran toward the van. The older brother said one of the men punched his brother in the leg, and the other man threw a rock at him, before jumping in the van and taking off.

The older brother said the bald driver was wearing a shirt with a stitched nameplate that said, “Hello, My name is Zac.”

He said one of the men was wearing a black vest with a pentagon symbol on the back.

Sgt. LaFlower said police spoke with a firefighter in the West Warren Station who reported seeing a dark blue van with whitewall tires about the time the incident was reported to have taken place.

He saw a van drive by, but had no other information.

The sergeant said no one was able to provide any information about the van’s license plate.

Sgt. LaFlower said local police would be continuing the investigation, and he would be calling today for assistance from state police detectives assigned to the office of Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr.

He said a description of the vehicle was sent to all area police departments.
