Tyngsboro Police To Get New Weapons

TYNGSBORO -- It's a decision made in a tenth of a second. The smallest slip-up can be the difference between life and death.
After firing the same handguns for the past decade, the Tyngsboro Police Department is looking to replace its arsenal.
"You want to have confidence in that weapon. After 10 years, you can't have that confidence anymore," said Tyngsboro Police Chief William Mulligan.
When Mulligan joined the department on July 1, the senior firearms instructor, Sgt. Christopher Chronopoulos, noted that gun manufacturers recommend police departments replace their weapons every five years. Tyngsboro was long overdue.
"It's not the typical gun being put on a shelf at home. It's being carried every day. There's a certain amount of wear and tear," said Mulligan.
Mulligan said the .40-caliber Hecker & Koch pistols officers use on the beat and during training exercises have had to be repaired and have occasionally failed in recent years, creating a danger for officers on duty.
Mulligan said he plans to spend $15,768 to purchase 27 Sig 226 handguns at $584 a piece.
The department will also trade-in 27 of its old guns for $9,875. In total, the new guns will cost the department $5,893.
Mulligan plans to pay for the guns with money left over in his budget.
Officers in Tyngsboro use their guns for training at least once a year. State law requires an annual weapons qualification for officers, but the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council recommends training at least twice a year.
"I'd like to see that be twice a year for us," said Mulligan.
Mulligan said he did not know off hand how often Tyngsboro officer fire their guns in the line of duty, but he didn't think there was "a long history of it."
"Across the nation, most police officers go 30 years in their career without having to fire their weapon in the line of duty," said Mulligan. "You like to know that it doesn't happen very often."

ok, so now H&K are making crappy pistols?...Look I like new guns as much as anyone but Ive got pistols (of all types) that are older than alot of the members of this site AND THEY STILL WORK . Unless your not maintaining them modern firearms will outlast our life spans.

JAP like you said I think the issue in most case is crappy maintance. They don't take the time to clean and lube like they should and then wonder why the pistol dosn't work right.

Just a little over $200.00 per gun, not a bad deal.
