NEWBURYPORT - A Salisbury woman created "chaos" after she stole a friend's car and took a wild ride through town yesterday afternoon, according to police.
At about 4:45 p.m., police said they received numerous calls about a woman driving recklessly and tailgating in the western end of the city. At the same time, a man reported a friend had taken his van from the Market Basket parking lot on Story Avenue. Another person reported the woman had run over his parked motorcycle, police said.
Police followed the woman over the Chain Bridge into Amesbury, where she crashed the van into a retaining wall on Old Merrill Street and fled on foot before being captured.
Anita Downs, 35, of 40 Brissett Ave., was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, stealing a car, leaving the scene of an accident and on a warrant. She was to be arraigned today in Newburyport District Court.
Sgt. Alan Maguire praised witnesses who called in descriptions of Downs to police, saying they helped officers capture her quickly.
"She caused a lot of chaos," Maguire said. "We had great assistance from the public - this could have been a disaster."
