Salisbury man dies after Bridge Road crash
By Dan Atkinson
Staff Writer

SALISBURY - A Beach Road man was pronounced dead after a car crash on Bridge Road Saturday morning. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
Keith Buford, 55, of 211 Beach Road, was driving his Volvo sedan about 9:50 a.m. when, according to witnesses, the car began swerving to the right as it came off the Gillis Bridge. The car hit the curb and several other objects before riding along the guardrail and flipping on its side, finally stopping in front of 165 Bridge Road.
Rescue workers used a hydraulic extraction tool to get Buford out of the car and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at Anna Jaques Hospital.
Sgt. Robert Roy, who is investigating the accident, said that while speed did not appear to be a factor, Buford's Volvo had faulty equipment. The car's airbags had been deployed before, and instead of being replaced, they had been stuffed back in their compartments and taped closed.
Neighbors at Buford's Beach Road apartment building said Buford knew the airbags had been used, and he was going to get a new steering wheel. While they did not see much of Buford, who worked a night shift, they remembered him as a "really good guy." People interested in sending condolences to Buford's family, who police said live in New Jersey, should contact Michelle Merrill at 978-479-9029 or Richard Little at 978-420-7754.
Roy said police had not ruled out a medical condition as a cause for the accident, but would have to wait for an autopsy.
"We may find that Mr. Buford could have suffered a medical emergency of some sort that caused him to lose control of the vehicle," Roy said. "The only fortunate thing out of this accident was that no one else was hurt."
