A 20-year-old shooting victim was fighting to survive and at least seven others were shot or stabbed as a weekend of violence erupted amid scorching temperatures.
Despite the bloodshed, top police brass praised frontline cops for stamping out the threat of a gang war at Saturday’s Caribbean festival in Dorchester.
“There were some unfortunate incidents, but quite frankly, my cops did an amazing job to keep the city safe,” said Superintendent Daniel Linskey.
He said the BPD was bracing for gangs to use the Grove Hall festival as a battleground. “It was a real concern because we had intelligence that kids were going to use the festival to wreak havoc,” Linskey said.
Cops on foot patrols, bicycles, motorcycles and even in a helicopter kept a close eye on known members of 11 different gangs while recovering guns from six youngsters, Linskey said. Three people were stabbed by 7 p.m. Saturday. All were near Blue Hill Avenue and Seaver Street and expected to survive, police said. Less than three hours later, cops were called again to Seaver Street after a man was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and back following an argument, police said. The victim was listed in serious but stable condition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital yesterday. Witnesses described the attacker, and soon afterward officers arrested Anthony G. Fernandes, 18, of Dorchester, on Lexington Street, Hyde Park. He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to murder. At about 4:50 a.m. yesterday, shots reportedly rang out on Delano Street in Dorchester. Although cops found nothing at the scene, they were later called to Boston Medical Center after four shooting victims showed up, police said. Three victims, ages 19, 20 and 22, had non-life threatening injuries. Another 20-year-old man was in critical condition, police said.
Makes the St. Patricks Day parade seem tame by comparison. Couple drunken brawls in South Boston vs. multiple stabbings, several shootings, dozens of lost children, 1/2 dozen gun arrests all attributed to "outside influences not associated with the festival". Total B.S. and we all know it. Just a magnet for trouble.
