A “crazed” raider burst into a Jamaica Plain apartment and then dove headfirst from a fourth-floor window to escape cops, police and terrified witnesses said.
“I was panicked and hysterical,” Jamie Alexander, 26, told the Herald. She and her boyfriend, Patrick Brennan, 24, took cover on a fire escape as an intruder smashed his way into her Glen Road apartment at about 1:30 a.m. yesterday.
Cops said when they arrived they heard yelling from the apartment then saw the suspect “jump” from a fourth-floor kitchen window and plummet to a concrete courtyard below.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he was listed yesterday in critical condition.
“The police told us he went headfirst through the window, taking the screen with him,” Brennan said. “We didn’t see it, but we heard the cops running out of the building screaming, ‘Oh my God.’ ”
The nightmare began when the couple awoke to a violent banging on the front door. “We were scared. We jumped out of bed and ran for the fire escape. He sounded crazy and violent,” Brennan said.
The apartment is opposite the District 13 police station.
“Only someone who was crazy would break into a building across the street from a police station,” Alexander said. “That is why we hid.”
Cowering on the fire escape, the couple frantically dialed 911 and shouted into the street for help.
“He punched a hole in a wall. I was concerned for Jamie’s roommate who was alone in her bedroom,” said Brennan, who works in promotions.
Moments later, cops stormed the building and the suspect hurled himself out of the window. “When the police tried getting into the apartment, I could hear him crying and smashing dishes,” Brennan said.

An intruder who crashed into a Jamaica Plain apartment and escaped cops by diving headfirst from a fourth-floor window has died.
Boston police said 24-year-old Matthew Thomas Miller of Norwood smashed his way into the Glen Road apartment on Sunday at 1:30 a.m., terrifying the unsuspecting tenants inside who cowered on a fire escape and called 911.
As officers tried to enter the apartment, they heard yelling from inside and saw Miller jump out the window and fall from the fourth story onto a concrete courtyard.
He was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries yesterday, police said.
Tenant Jamie Alexander, 26, and her boyfriend Patrick Brennan, 24, told the Herald they were “panicked and hysterical” as they woke to the sound of Miller breaking into the apartment.
They ran for cover on the fire escape and heard him vandalizing their home.
When cops arrived from the nearby District 13 police station, the couple said they heard the intruder swear at officers and burst into tears before scrambling to reach a kitchen window.
