MIDDLETON - A man awaiting trial at Middleton Jail is facing new charges after allegedly punching a fellow inmate in the jail's law library Wednesday morning. Daniel Barnes, 33, of Salisbury is now being held without bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to charges of assault and battery on fellow inmate Alfred Shulte. At around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Barnes and Shulte were in the jail's law library, where Shulte often volunteered to help out, according to court papers. Barnes, who was researching his case in the library, allegedly punched Shulte on the side of his head, and the blow knocked him to the floor, leaving him with severe injuries, according to the complaint. Jail spokesman Paul Fleming said the dispute stemmed from Barnes' request for help preparing documents in a pending court case. Shulte told him he was too busy to help. Fleming said the injured inmate was treated at a Boston hospital and was returned to the jail yesterday. Barnes was being held on bail after his arrest earlier this month in Salisbury on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, driving to endanger and other charges. On Aug. 9, Judge Peter Doyle had warned him to stay out of further trouble while the case was pending. Because he is charged with not heeding that warning, a Salem District Court judge revoked his bail in that case and set another bail of $5,000 in the assault case. Earlier this summer, Barnes was driving a van belonging to his business, Northern Gutter, when he passed out at the wheel and took out six cars, destroyed a traffic signal and crashed into a sign outside a day care center in Lawrence. That accident, which occurred in June, was blamed on medical problems, and Barnes was not charged.
