BROCKTON — A convicted sex offender who claimed he was homeless was arrested Friday for failing to register with police after authorities learned he was living in a Belmont Street apartment since January.
Dennis Taylor, 54, a sex offender considered by the state as a high risk to re-offend, was arrested at 287 Belmont St., apartment 2 by Detective Mike Cesarini and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
Taylor had registered with the police department in January as a sex offender but he claimed he was homeless, Lt. John Crowley, chief of detectives, said.
But Cesarini received information earlier this week that Taylor was living in a Belmont Street apartment and launched an investigation, Crowley said.
Taylor called the police department Aug. 22 to say he was still homeless and made an appointment to come into the station Thursday to register, Crowley said.
All homeless sex offenders must register every 45 days, Crowley said.
When Taylor didn't show up on Thursday, Cesarini went to the Belmont Street house and spoke to the landlord, Crowley said.
“After speaking with the landlord, he learned Taylor had been living there since January,” Crowley said.
Taylor had been convicted of rape and abuse of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. The convictions were in 1978, 1983 and 1984.
