WBZ)BOSTON A Manchester woman faces an animal cruelty charge after her dog died from heat stroke in June while it was locked in a pen with no shade or water.
Manchester Animal Control Officer Dennis Walsh went to the woman's home on June 1 after a neighbor reported seeing two dogs in the backyard, one of which appeared to be dead.
Walsh said when he arrived at the house he found the two dogs inside a chain link animal pen. One dog ran loose in the yard, while the other lay dead on its side inside the pen, Walsh said.
Officials said the dog, an English bull dog, appeared to have died from heat stroke and heat exposure.
The ground of the pen was black asphalt with no roof or other shelter from direct sunlight, officials said, adding that there was no water, or even a water bowl in the pen or the yard.
The owner of the dog that died, 27-year-old Tiffany Jubrey, appeared in Manchester District Court Friday to face one count of animal cruelty.
The charge alleges that Jubrey put both dogs inside the pen in the morning before leaving for work. Temperatures that day reached close to 90 degrees with very high humidity.
The dog that survived, also a bull dog, belonged to Jubrey's boyfriend and suffered from heat exposure as well. Walsh took the dog and hosed it down and put it in an air conditioned vehicle. It recovered fully.
He is now in the process of pursuing court proceedings to take permanent custody of the dog, officials said.
