Aug. 21--WASHOUGAL -- Washougal police suspect an arsonist torched an officer's patrol car in the driveway of his home late last week -- in retaliation for a police crackdown on illegal drugs.
The car, a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria used by a Washougal K-9 officer and his drug-sniffing dog, was destroyed in the blaze shortly before midnight on Friday, according to a -bulletin from Police Chief Cam Hershaw.
Neighbors called 911 and worked to prevent the blaze from spreading before firefighters arrived. The officer's Washougal home -- about five feet from the flaming car -- wasn't damaged, said -Detective Sgt. Brad Chicks.
The officer, who Chicks declined to identify, and the dog, a brown-and-white mixed breed named Shaaka, were off duty and weren't home at the time. No one was reported injured.
"It is a little scary considering how close the vehicle was to the house," Chicks said. "It could have been worse."
Asked whether investigators believe the alleged arsonist thought the officer and dog were at home, Chicks said police don't know.
Chicks wouldn't say exactly how the fire was started or why fire investigators suspect it was deliberately set.
But he said police have received information that the car was torched because officers have been going after illegal drugs, including methamphetamine and marijuana.
So far this year, the Washougal department, with about 20 police officers, has made 126 drug-related arrests, police said.
"Crime is down in Washougal due to the aggressive drug interdiction," Hershaw said in the bulletin. He added, "The drug investigations and drug arrests will continue unabated."
The case is being investigated by Washougal police and the Washougal fire marshal.
Chicks, a 24-year veteran with the department, said the last similar attack on police occurred in the 1980s, when someone put an explosive device in an officer's personal car.
Like Friday's incident, the car was parked near the officer's house. The officer wasn't in the car at the time of the explosion, Chicks said.
Anyone with information about Friday's fire is asked to call Chicks at 360-835-8701 or e-mail chicks@washougalpd.org

Is it common for a PD to use a mutt for K9 drug work as opposed to the S&R or tactical - patrol dog you commonly see (like a German or Dutch Sheppard or Belgium Malinois)?

The most efficient use of dogs is to cross train. Many dogs are both patrol dogs and sniffers. The sniffers can be trained to find people, drugs and/or explosives. Some can even find guns! The most unusual one I ever saw was the beagle at Logan airport trained to find illegal meat from foreign lands which people try to smuggle in for their own use (I love that Irish bacon). I have a dog that can find food wherever it is so maybe I'll assign him per diem to the airport.
