Florida Deputy Killed in Alabama

Holmes County Sheriff's Reserve Deputy Joe Galloway, 61, died in a single-vehicle accident as he attempted to catch a speeding motorist, according to a statement by the Holmes County Sheriff's Office.
Galloway, who had served one year as an auxiliary deputy, had been patrolling the New Hope Community when he lost control of his patrol car on Yancy Road and died at the scene of the accident just north of the Alabama state line.
According to Geneva County Coroner Max Motley, the accident call came in after 7 p.m. The accident only Galloway's vehicle.
Motley said the Galloway's vehicle hit a tree and at some point flipped onto its roof. The deputy, he said, was killed instantly.
Alabama Highway Patrol, Florida Highway Patrol and the Geneva County Sheriff's Office were among the law enforcement agencies on the scene. Motley had no information on what happened to the vehicle being chased by the deputy.
Galloway had been an active member of the auxiliary for about one year. He was an active member of the New Hope Community and Holmes County.
Prior to volunteering his time with the Auxiliary, he founded the New Hope Crime Watch and served a term as president over the program. He was also a deacon at the New Hope Baptist Church, Gideon, active member of the New Hope Masonic Lodge and original member of the Holmes County Crimestoppers Board.
Galloway served 23 years in the U.S. Army Airborne Division, including a tour in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Galloway; one son Geneva, Police Officer Keith Galloway (Carolyn); one daughter Kellie Bishop (Jim); four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
