Police apprehend deli robber

NORTHVALE — A robber who stole $38 at knifepoint from a local delicatessen locked his keys in the getaway car, giving police enough time to catch him, authorities said today.
Brian Robinson, 47, of Pearl River, N.Y., entered Petrillo’s Deli on Livingston Street around 6:30 a.m. and waved a butcher knife to intimidate employees and customers before fleeing with cash from the register, said Capt. Vincent St. Angelo.

But after locking his keys in his car, he had to break a window to get in.
Meanwhile, police were called and given the description of the robber and his maroon Chevy Malibu.
Officers caught up to Robinson as he sped up Livingston Street toward the New York state line, St. Angelo said. Robinson lost control of his vehicle, crashing on Oak Tree Road in Tappan, N.Y., the captain said.
He had to be extricated from the car and was treated for minor injuries at Nyack Hospital.
“This was their first day open after several weeks of vacation, so they just had some change money in their cash register,” St. Angelo said. “It was just a matter of seconds until our guys got there.
"It’s nice to have a small town.”
Robinson is being held at Rockland County Jail, charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, weapons possession, and eluding authorities, among other counts.
He is awaiting an extradition hearing.
