RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. — The man, Guadalupe Garcia Sanchez, 53, of Indio, later died at a local hospital, authorities said Sunday.
Shortly after 3 a.m., three deputies went to a residence in the 85-000 block of Avenida Maria, in Coachella, on a report of a man who was attempting suicide.
Upon arrival, the deputies found Sanchez in the home's kitchen.
The deputies were in the process of talking with Sanchez when he grabbed a kitchen knife and ran toward one of the deputies, officials said.
The two other deputies, hoping to protect the third, fired on Sanchez, officials added.
Sanchez, however, then turned toward the armed deputies and attempted to strike them, according to a news release.
The deputies fired again.
The deputies, whose names have not been released, were placed on leave per department policy, while an investigation is conducted to determine if proper protocol was followed. One deputy is a 2-year veteran of law enforcement, while the second has 10 years experience in law enforcement.
